MOUNT OLIVE (Nov. 4) – In the opening meet of the year, sophomore Skyelar Smith registered a runner-up finish in the 143-weight class on Saturday, as UMO featured four wrestlers on the podium at the Trojan Open in Kornegay Arena.

The University of Mount Olive women's wrestling team featured 13 wrestlers at the event, including nine newcomers to the roster. The Trojans featured at least one individual in eight of the 10 weight classes.

Smith placed second overall at 143 after posting a 2-1 record following an opening-round bye. In the quarterfinals, she won via fall over Tati Encinas of the University of Cumberlands before securing another pin in the semifinals against Malia Cook of Bluefield State. In the championship match, Smith suffered to second-period loss to Olivia Hogan of the University of Cumberlands.

Freshman Mallory McDonald had an outstanding debut for the Trojans after finishing third in the 109-weight class with a 4-1 mark while recording the fastest tech fall at the event. She suffered a first-round loss by a 14-10 decision to Gracie Elliott of the University of Cumberlands. McDonald followed up with four straight victories with a trio via fall. After working her way through the consolation bracket she recorded a win by fall over Jillian Lackey of Allen in the third-place match.

Fellow freshman Angelica Steffy reached the podium with a fourth-place finish at 130 while posting a 2-2 record. Following a first-round bye, Steffy collected a win by pin over Michaiah Allen of Montreat before suffering a loss via tech fall by Kamilah Brooks of D1 Elite Wrestling Club. In the consolation bracket, Steffy recorded a 12-2 tech fall over Nathalie Erazo of Southern Virginia but fell in the third-place match to Tonya Flournroy of St. Andrews by fall.

Redshirt freshman transfer Diandra Tejada posted a fourth-place finish in the 101-weight class in her debut with the program. In her fourth-round bout, she recorded a 10-0 tech fall over Alex Uribe of the University of the Cumberlands.

Sophomore Isabella Kessey delivered a 2-2 record at 155 while competing at the Trojan Open. She produced a victory by pin over Abby French of Southern Virginia before suffering a loss via fall to Taylor Whitehurst. Kessey rebounded to record a win by fall against her teammate Jocelyn Mattingly. In the third round consolation, she fell by a 10-0 tech fall to Faith Bane of Havelock Wrestling Club.

The Trojans return to the mat on Wednesday, Nov. 8. when they face Emmanuel in a dual meet, starting at 6 p.m.
