SNOW HILL, N.C. (Oct. 17) – The University of Mount Olive men's golf team featured three players on the top-10 overall on the individual leaderboard, as the Trojans finished third at the Barton Fall Intercollegiate on Tuesday at the Cutter Creek Golf Club.
Mount Olive posted a 17-over 881 (297-289-295) to place third in a field of 17 teams, including multiple schools from the Conference Carolinas. The host Bulldogs cruised to the tournament title by nine strokes after shooting a two-under 862 (287-289-286) and firing the lowest third-round score. Newberry claimed second in the team standings with a seven-over 871 (284-288-299) after holding the lead following the initial two rounds of play.
Sophomore
Rasmus Ronnberg led the Trojans and tied for fourth place after climbing five spots during the final round. He carded a one-over 217 (73-73-71) and tied for the team lead with 38 pars while converting eight birdies over 54 holes. During the competition, Ronnberg registered six birdies on the front nine and collected his third top-10 finish this fall.
Sophomores
Max Lindblad and
Matthew Richardson tied for seventh place at three-over (219) while competing at the two-day event. Lindblad (74-73-72) paced the team with a staggering 14 birdies, ranking second in a field of nearly 100 golfers. Additionally, he played the par four holes on the courses at a collective five-under. Richardson (77-69-73) produced an outstanding performance with 36 pars and nine birdies at Cutter Creek Golf Club. During the second round, he shot an impressive three-under 69 with five birdies.
Fellow sophomore
Shawn Benson tied for 26th overall on Tuesday after carding a 10-over 226 (73-74-79) while converting 35 pars and five birdies. Graduate student
Cade Hancock rounded out the group and tied for 63rd place after registering a 20-over 236 (82-74-80) with 32 pars.
Additionally, the Trojans featured a second team, which placed 13th overall in the team standings with a 60-over 924 (309-311-304). Junior
Edvin Perman paced the team after tying for 22nd overall with an eight-over 224 (73-76-75) behind 38 pars and four birdies. Junior
Gabriel Ekholm tied for 37th place at 13-over 229 (76-77-76) and made an eagle on the par-five fifth hole during the second round. Senior
David Hoermann jumped 16 positions on the leaderboard on the final day to tie for 57th overall after firing an 18-over 234 (78-82-74) with 29 pars and six birdies. Fellow senior
Justin Sterner posted a 24-over 240 (85-76-79) to tie for 76th overall while senior
Preston Patterson finished 95th with a 41-over 257 (82-88-87).
Barton senior Harrison Wierse earned medalist honors by two strokes with a five-under 211 (73-70-68) after recording two eagles and nine birdies.
The Trojans return to the course on October 24-25, when they travel to the Lenoir-Rhyne Fall Invitational at the Lake Hickory Country Club.
