Trojan Field Hockey Wins Double Overtime Thriller 1-0 Over Newberry

Mount Olive, N.C.--  The University of Mount Olive (2-4, 2-2) defeated Newberry College (3-4, 0-3) 1-0 in double overtime in conference action Wednesday afternoon. UMO with the win secures the program's highest win total since its inaugural season in 2019.

Game Information
The opening quarters saw Mount Olive and Newberry exchange shot leads as UMO out shot NC 6-0 in the first quarter and the Wolves out shot the Trojans 6-0 in the second. Going into halftime UMO held a 5-to-4 advantage in shots on goal but the game remained scoreless.

In the third Mount Olive had one chance to score but were once again held off the boards. Newberry countered with three chances but Victoria Lane held the Wolves scoreless as well.

The final quarter Mount Olive had four penalty corners but were unable to convert. The best chance the Trojans had to score in regulation was 30 seconds remaining in the game when Newberry committed a foul in front of goal giving UMO a penalty stroke opportunity. The shot went wide and the game ended still 0-0.

The first overtime period was all Wolves as they out shot UMO 5-1, but still were held without a score.

The second overtime period was the polar opposite as Mount Olive out shot Newberry 6-1. With 3:53 left in the contest Mount Olive found an opening in the Wolves defense. Annefleur Moerkerken shot a pass to the left side of the field and found an open Morgan Patterson. Patterson made a miraculous back handed shot after deking the NC keeper to her right and slapped the game-winning goal to the back of the left side of the goal.

Trojan Leaders
Patterson led the Trojans with UMO's game-winning goal and had six shots, four on goal, in total for the contest. Trojan keeper Victoria Lane also had eight saves in the contest.

Wolves Leaders
Newberry was led by Lily Drury with three seven shots, five on frame.

Key Stat
Mount Olive beat Newberry in all offensive statistical category; shots (22-17), shots on goal (15-10), and penalty corners (9-4).
