Trojan Field Hockey Topples Queens 3-1 In Home Opener

Mount Olive, N.C.--  The University of Mount Olive defeated Queens University 3-1 in South Atlantic Conference Carolinas action Friday afternoon. The win was the first for UMO since their inaugural season in 2019 and Queens University was the runner-up in the Conference Championship last season.

Game Information
Mount Olive was under intense pressure as the opening quarter began with a penalty corner for Queens in the first 1:53 of play. Trojan keeper Victoria Lane denied the chance and kept the game scoreless.

Queens, however, found the back of the goal in the 6th minute and took the early lead. UMO answered two minutes later when Railyn King tied the contest 8:38 into the first.

As if it were a case of deja vu two minutes later again Mount Olive took the lead on Annefluer Moerkerken's first collegiate goal at the 10:33 mark. UMO kept the Royals quite and held the 2-1 lead into the second.

UMO held Queens off the boards in the second after a barrage of attacks including three consecutive penalty corners and a penalty stroke opportunity. The half came to a close with the Trojans holding the one-goal advantage.

In the third Mount Olive extended their lead under two minutes into the quarter as Moerkerken added her second goal to the books, after a UMO penalty corner. Queens struck for times for goal, bt were again denied.

Mount Olive held the Royals to just three shots in the final quarter and sealed their first win of the 2021 season.

Trojan Leaders
Moerkerken led the Trojans with two goals off five shots. King also added a score. Morgan Paterson finished with one assist. Defensively Lane corralled 10 saves including two penalty stroke chances in her 60 minutes in goal.

Queens was led by Karlee Alt with the only score for the Royals.

Key Moment
Mount Olive had the momentum swing in the first quarter when Moerkerken broke the tie and gave UMO the lead they never relinquished.

"Last weekend we started playing games as a young team with growth potential. Today we saw that growth in a well executed game that was won by the whole team," said head coach Daan Polders.

The Trojans hit the road to play a set of contests in Pennsylvania September 17 and 18 against Kutztown and Millersville respectively.
