No.9 Trojans Stay Hot on the Road Beating Newberry 10-9

NEWBERRY, SOUTH CAROLINA - The No.9 University of Mount Olive men's lacrosse team defeated Newberry College 10-9 in road action Tuesday afternoon in Newberry, S.C.

INSIDE THE SCORE

Mount Olive wasted no time getting a goal on the scoreboard as Tim Collins found the back of the net at the 13:53 mark. UMO's Aidan Lalonde found his hot hand and added two more goals to the scoreboard putting Mount Olive in the lead 3-0 with 10:22 remaining in the quarter. The Wolves were finally able to get up on the scoreboard as they went on a 2-1 run in the last ten minutes of the frame, ending the quarter 4-2. 

In the second quarter, Mount Olive's Lucas Shein scored two goals with 12:27 remaining to put the Trojans up by four. Dylan Brink found Chaz Goodman to put one more up for Mount Olive at the 11:22 mark. The Wolves clawed their way back when Scott Reed and Caleb Forga found the back of the net, scoring two goals making it 7-4. Mount Olive responded quickly as Conner Watson scored with 4:43 remaining in the quarter. Caleb Forga and Justin Messersmith topped off the score making the score 8-6 before the half. 

In the third quarter, the Wolves came back with a little bit of fire scoring the first two goals of the quarter off Bucky Bukta and Kyle Dunklee, making the game tied 8-8. Mount Olive put one more up on the board in a man-up situation by freshmen Aidan Lalonde. The Trojans remained in the lead 9-8 going into the final quarter. 

In the final quarter, Newberry's Justin Messersmith scored with 12:15 remaining, making the game tied 9-9. The Trojans responded and scored the go ahead goal by Samuel Skousen with 7:42 remaining. The Trojans were able to shut down the Wolves for the remainder of the game and took home the 10-9 victory.

Aidan Lalonde led the Trojans with three goals. Andrew Avarello had 14 saves.

NEWBERRY LEADERS

Caleb Forga led the Wolves with three goals.

KEY MOMENT

The game's key moment was in the final quarter when Samuel found the back of the net to put the Trojans in the lead by one.

UP NEXT

Mount Olive will return in action on March 10 when the Trojans are back at the Ray McDonald Sr. Sports Complex to face Colorado Mesa University. The first face-off is set for 3 p.m.
