Mount Olive Field Hockey Upsets Converse 2-1 On Senior Day

Mount Olive, N.C.--  The University of Mount Olive (6-8, 6-6) took down Converse University (10-6, 8-4) 2-1 on senior day, in South Atlantic Conference Carolinas action Saturday afternoon. The win against Converse is on the heels of CU winning the Conference regular-season championship. Prior to the game McKenzie Yi, Victoria Lane, and Brianna McDaniel were honored.

Game Information
The opening two quarters was a defensive battle as 15 shots were recorded, but neither team could score. Mount Olive played stellar defense in the final two minutes of second quarter as the Trojans held off three-straight penalty corners and five shots from Converse.

In the third, the Trojans found an opening off a penalty corner seven minutes in. Annefleur Moerkerken found an open Alisia Lovejoy on the opposite end of the goal and Lovejoy finished the chance to put UMO up 1-0.

The Trojans wasted no tim increasing their lead as Moerkerken found a goal off a pass from Amber Dercksen 1:03 later. Only one shot came from Converse for the remainder of the quarter and UMO led 2-0.

Converse found an answer 3:13 into the fourth as Catalina Pistaccio drew the deficit to one. In the final six minutes Converse received a yellow card forcing the Valkyries to play a man down for the next five minutes and took away any chance of forcing the game to go into overtime.

Moerkerken led the Trojans with a goal and an assist off five shots.

The Trojans with the win, have earned the No. 5 seed in the South Atlantic Conference Carolinas Tournament. UMO will take on No. 4 seeded Newberry on Nov. 2 at 6 p.m. in Newberry, S.C.
