Softball Drops Doubleheader To Francis Marion In Season-Opener

FLORENCE, South Carolina - The University of Mount Olive softball team dropped a doubleheader to the Patriots of Francis Marion University 4-3, 5-4 on Saturday afternoon in Florence, S.C.

GAME ONE INFORMATION
Mount Olive took the momentum from the beginning capitalizing on a Francis Marion error that allowed Breanna Voelker to score the first run of the game in the third. FMU countered in the bottom half with an RBI-single and the game remained knotted until the seventh.

Mikayla Koch broke the tie with a two-RBI single to give the Trojans a 3-1 lead and the pressure was back on the Patriots heading into the final inning.

Francis Marion down to their final out with the bases loaded found a hole in left field and cleared the bases for the game-winning walk-off base hit and took game one 4-3.

TROJAN LEADERS
The Trojans were led by Mikayla Koch who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Eileen Barrera also had a good outing at the plate going 3-for-3. Hailey Brogden (0-1) got pinned with the loss as she went six and two-thirds allowing four runs off six hits and struck out six.

FRANCIS MARION LEADERS
The Patriots were led by Megan Matsil who went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Katelyn Ellard (1-0) got the win going seven complete allowing three runs off eight hits and struck out seven. 

KEY MOMENT
The key moment came in the final out as Matsil for FMU hit the three-RBI walk-off single to boost the Patriots to the 4-3 win.

GAME TWO INFORMATION
Mount Olive took the momentum in the second when Megan Bryant scored on a Francis Marion error and put UMO ahead 1-0. The Trojans went onto to plate three more runs in the fifth to extend their lead to four on the bats of Madison Morgan and Eileen Barerra. 

Francis Marion added a solo run in the fifth but looked to make a comeback in the seventh.

Two RBI base hits plated the first runs of the inning cutting the Trojan lead in half, but the Patriots were not done. A steal of home drew the deficit to one and with one swing of a Patriot bat, the lead was gone on a two-RBI single and Francis Marion walked-off for the second straight game 5-4.

TROJAN LEADERS
The Trojans were led by Madison Morgan who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Mallory Ratcliff (0-1) was pinned with the loss going six and a third allowing four runs off eight hits and struck out a pair.

FRANCIS MARION LEADERS
The Patriots were led by Janecia Hemingway who went 2-for-2 with two RBI. Hemingway (1-0) also got the win inside the circle going a complete game allowing four runs off seven hits and struck out one Trojan bat. 

KEY MOMENT
The key moment came in the final at-bat when the Patriots walked off for the second game in a row.

Mount Olive will open play at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field in the UMO Round Robin Tournament February 8 against Winston-Salem State and Alderson Broaddus at 2/4 p.m.
