FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA. - The 2019 Conference Carolinas Men's Basketball All-Conference honors were announced on Saturday morning at the awards banquet in Franklin Springs, Ga., in advance of the 2019 Conference Carolinas Men's Basketball Championship Tournament semifinals hosted by No. 1 seeded Emmanuel College. At the banquet, the 'Of the Year' or major awards were announced as well as the all-conference teams and the UMO Trojans picked up one all-conference nod and two Conference Carolinas 'Of the Year' awards.
Redshirt senior Jamaal Matin was named the 2019 Conference Carolinas Defensive Player of the Year for the second year in a row and earned an All-Conference first-team nod. Joining Matin among the list of 'Of the Year' honorees is teammate Michael Brown who was voted on by the coaches as the 2019 Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year.
Michael Brown made an immediate impact on the Trojan lineup and has started every game as the point guard for the UMO MBKB team. Brown has led the team all season in assists (142) and assists per game (4.9) as well as leading the conference for much of the season. The freshman from Winchester, Va., is second on the team in points w/ 294 and steals w/ 33, while he sits fourth in rebounds w/ 111 on the season.
Jamaal Matin led Mount Olive in a majority of statistical categories including points (489), points per game (17.6), free throw percentage (80.5%), free throws made (99) and attempted (123), three-point percentage (41.3%), three-pointers made (78) and attempted (189), field goals made (166) and attempted (353), minutes (1052), rebounds (177), and steals (34). He has garnered two player of the week awards this season and is a three-time all-conference honoree. He is also the first back-to-back defensive player of the year for the UMO MBKB program.
