Box Score No 5 University of Mount Olive defeated No. 19 Queens University (NC) 14-8 in non-conference men's lacrosse from Amon Field Wednesday night. Nico Shewey led the Trojans with four goals on the night.
Mount Olive (12-2) trailed early as Garrett Chan for Queens (9-6) found the back of the net 1:12 into the first quarter. Matt Shields quickly got the trojans back on track as he found space for a goal with 11:15 left in the quarter and tied the game. Jacob Ball then gave Mount Olive the lead with 10:44.
Queens wasted no time tying the game again as 19 seconds later Griffin Stechmiller knotted the game at two.
Shields sparked the Trojans as his goal with 9:11 triggered a 3-0 run and Mount Olive jumped ahead 5-2. The Royals got the last punch in the quarter with under 30 seconds left in the first to draw the Trojans lead down to 5-3.
Both squads remained even after the second quarter as two goals from both sides were scored and the Trojans headed into halftime up 7-5.
The third quarter went Mount Olive's way Thatcher Clark, Shewey, and Luke Morris helped extend the Trojan lead to 10-6 going into the final quarter.
The Royals were able to draw to as close as 11-8 after a goal by Chan. Mount Olive, however, put in three more goals, the final coming in a man down situation and Mount Olive took the victory under the lights at Amon Field.
Luke Morris led the defense as he had three caused turnovers and five groundballs. Morris was also a perfect 2-for-2 in shots as he picked up two goals. Behind Shewey's team leading goal night, Shields and Clark added two goals apiece.
In goal Ross Bowman (12-2) allowed eight goals while recording 11 saves on 28 total shots taken by Queens.
Mount Olive will hit the road for the final game of the 2016 regular season as the Trojans will travel to Gaffney, S.C. to take on the defending National Champions Limestone College. Match time is set for 1 p.m. Saturday.
