Mount Olive Splits With Limestone

University of Mount Olive spilt a Conference Carolinas softball doubleheader with Limestone College 3-1, 5-3 Sunday afternoon at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field. Mount Olive took game one 3-1 and tried to rally back in game two in the seventh but fell 5-3.

Mount Olive (26-16 Overall, 12-4 Conference Carolinas) started out hot as Anna Ingram doubled to left center to lead off the second. Jazmin Montgomery singled back up the middle but the play forced Ingram to stay at second. Kelly Huffman came in to pinch run and both runners moved up on a wild pitch.

Callie Ferrell singled into left center and scored the first run of the game for Mount Olive. Caitlin Ewers followed the base hit by picking up an RBI-groundout as Huffman scored. Charlene Thompson drove home the final run on a fielder's choice as Limestone (24-11, 11-2) attempted to make a play at the plate but it was not in time.

Limestone struck for a single run in the top of the fourth. Three straight singles amounted to the Saints only run of the game as Mount Olive allowed only two more hits the rest of the game.

Madison Johnston went the distance allowing one run off seven hits and struck out three.

Game two saw a different tale as Limestone got the first runs of the game off a two run sacrifice fly in the fourth. The Saints patted their lead in the sixth as Swearingen's two run home run gave Limestone a 4-0 lead.

An RBI-double gave the Saints a five run lead heading into the Trojans final at bats.

Kristin Power singled into the hole between second and third and beat out a throw from the Limestone shortstop for a lead-off single. Ferrell drew a walk to set the table for Caitlin Ewers. Ewers kept Mount Olive from being shut out as her RBI-single up the middle allowed Power to score from second. Thompson came in to pinch run for Ewers.

Following a strikeout, Kelsey Akers doubled in a run as Ferrell scored. Savannah Becker plated the third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to right and Thompson tagged from third. The go ahead run came to the plate but a flyout ended the threat of a comeback and Mount Olive fell in game two.

Mount Olive will play their final home contest against Chowan University this Tuesday from Nancy Chapman Cassell Field. Game time for the doubleheader is set for 3 p.m.
