Box Score Nationally 12th-ranked University of Mount Olive led by as many as four goals, but No. 4 Lake Erie rallied for three goals in 43 seconds to tie the game in regulation and the Storm went on to defeat the Trojans 10-9 in triple overtime in non-conference men's lacrosse Wednesday at Amon Field. Trojan goalkeeper Ross Bowman recorded 21 saves on 41 Lake Erie shots.
Mount Olive (5-2) led 8-4 with 11:39 left in the fourth period after Jake Duarte scored top shelf on an underhanded shot. Lake Erie (3-0) cut the lead in half after a pair of goals by Austin Bishop.
The Trojans appeared to get some breathing room when Nico Shewey found Cody Dowling for a goal to give Mount Olive a 9-6 advantage with 2:48 remaining. Lake Erie answered immediately as Justin Goodwin picked up the ground ball on the ensuing face off and scored from long range with 2:34 left.
The Storm then capitalized on Trojan penalties to score a pair of man-up goals 18 seconds apart. Lucas Shafer scored with 2:09 left and Courtland Black-Araujo added a goal with 1:51 remaining to tie the game 9-9. Mount Olive had a man-up opportunity in the final seconds of regulation, but the Trojans' shot attempt caromed off the helmet of Lake Erie goalkeeper Nicholas Simonetti as time expired to force overtime.
In the first overtime, a Trojan shot hit the post and Bowman made a save on Lake Erie's lone shot attempt. Simonetti made a save on a Trojan shot in the second overtime.
The Trojans killed a one-minute penalty in the third overtime, but Shafer got inside in the final minute and scored the game winner for Lake Erie with 39 seconds left.
Mount Olive jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period as Alex Tindall's goal with 7:01 left broke a scoreless tie and Brett Kingston followed with a goal with 2:33 remaining. After a Lake Erie turnover, Clayton Warren scored with 26 seconds left in the period.
Lake Erie got on the scoreboard early in the second period on Matthew Redmond's goal with 13:45 remaining. The Storm had a chance to pull within a goal after gaining a man advantage on a Trojan penalty. But Curtis McMullen caused a Lake Erie penalty, picked up his own ground ball across midfield and found Kingston for a short-handed goal with 6:44 remaining to give the Trojans a 4-1 lead.
Tindall's second goal of the half extended Mount Olive's lead to 5-1 with 3:59 remaining. Liam Smith scored just over a minute later for Lake Erie as the Storm cut the Trojans' lead to 5-2 at halftime.
Dowling, Kingston, Tindall and Warren scored two goals apiece for Mount Olive, which recorded 27 shots. Shewey finished with two assists.
Shafer led all players with four goals for Lake Erie.
Mount Olive opens Conference Carolinas play Saturday as the Trojans play host to North Greenville. Game time is 1 p.m. at Amon Field.
