Box Score A breakaway in the 106th minute was the difference as Mount Olive fell to Barton 1-0 in double overtime in Conference Carolinas women's soccer Wednesday at Wilson, N.C. Trojan freshman goalkeeper Stephanie McCoy, who finished with four saves in her longest collegiate outing, had helped turn away another breakaway opportunity moments earlier in the second overtime.
Mount Olive (1-5-1 overall, 0-2-0 Conference Carolinas) outshot Barton 14-8 for the match and 10-4 after halftime. Carlee Bock's shot from just above the box three minutes into the second half went inches above the crossbar. Maddy Robak came within inches of putting the Trojans on top midway through the second half when her 22-yard shot deflected off the bottom of the crossbar Barton and landed just outside the goal line.
Barton goalkeeper Carson Moore recorded seven saves, none bigger than a game saving stop four minutes into the second overtime. Trojan forward Ellie Barnes slipped past a Bulldog defender just inside the box and lined a shot inside the right post. Moore lunged and got her left hand on the ball to keep the match scoreless.
A Barton counter-attack led to a one-on-one and McCoy's only play was to come out of the box to challenge. Bulldog forward Jodi Barber was able to slip free and put the ball into an empty net at 105:26 to give Barton (4-3-0, 1-1-0) the win.
The box score doesn't tell the entire story of McCoy's performance, which includes holding Barton scoreless through 90 minutes of regulation and an overtime period. Along with preventing Barton shot opportunities on the defensive end, she helped create numerous counter-attack opportunities for Mount Olive. All but three of McCoy's punts and goal kicks went across the midfield line. She had a chance for a rare goalkeeper assist when Rae Williams played McCoy's punt to Lauren Power deep into the Barton third, but the Bulldogs were able to prevent a Trojan shot.
The match was a reunion of sorts as Mount Olive faced former Trojan head women's soccer coach Chris Shaw. Shaw spent four years at Mount Olive and led the Trojans to their first conference championship in 2004.
Mount Olive returns to action Saturday as the Trojans travel to Spartanburg, S.C., to take on Converse in a Conference Carolinas match-up. Match time is 6 p.m.
