Box Score After struggling to get off shots in the first stop of its Florida trip, Mount Olive erupted for its biggest scoring output since the season opener, running past Florida Tech 19-11 in non-conference men's lacrosse Saturday night in Melbourne, Fla.
After scoring six and eight goals total during its two-game losing skid, the Trojans (3-3) jumped on the Panthers (4-3) early and often. With the score tied 1-1, Jake Duarte and Nick Sanderson found the back of the net in a span of 1:12 of the first period to give the Trojans a lead they never relinquished.
The Panthers closed within 3-2 before Mount Olive reeled off five consecutive goals to build an 8-2 lead late in the period. The outburst was the most goals scored in a period by the Trojans since the program began with a 9-1 first period cushion against Young Harris.
Early on, the man to stop for Mount Olive was Cameron Walsh. The sophomore assisted on Sanderson's goal, then added a three of his own by the end of the first 15 minutes. Walsh came into the contest with five goals scored. He matched that total Saturday night.att Shields and Alex Tindall added markers of their own for an 8-3 lead after one.
Unlike the Young Harris game, the Trojans were not out of the woods yet. After Daniel and Matt Shields scored early in the second to extend the lead to 10-3, Florida Tech came storming back.
Andrew Conley struck twice for the Panthers and Ryan Bailey and Brian Bacarella added one apiece as Florida Tech cut the lead to 10-7 at halftime.
The Panthers only got as close as three goals once more. Spencer Gelinas and Walsh scores 41 seconds apart early in the third, before Florida Tech scored three of the next four to cut it to 13-10.
Then Mount Olive showed off its depth of offense. In succession, Curtis McMullen, Jake Hancock, Josh Schwartz and Blake Bennett tallied goals to put the game out of reach. Jake Duarte and Walsh closed out the match with goals.
In all, 11 different Trojans got in the scoring column, while Matt Shields, Daniel Shields, Walsh and Bennett each recorded multiple assists.
In goal, Rocky Bowman recorded a season-high 14 saves.
Mount Olive kept pressure on the Panthers by doing the little things. The Trojans won the battle of ground balls 53-31 and won 19-of-33 face-offs.
The win over Florida Tech could turn out to be a good omen for the Trojans. The Panthers own victories over Conference Carolinas rivals Coker and Belmont Abbey this season.
The Trojans continue their road trip March 17 when the team travels to Phillipi, W.Va. to meet Alderson-Broaddus.
