Box Score Jake Duarte scored three goals and added an assist, but Lake Erie broke up a halftime tie to win 16-8 in non-conference men's lacrosse Saturday afternoon at Amon Field.
The Trojans (2-2) rebounded from a tough start as the Storm jumped out to a 3-0 lead by late in the first period. Matt Shields' goal with 4:04 left got Mount Olive on the scoreboard, but Reagan Harding answered for Lake Erie (1-0) in the final minute.
In the second period, the Trojans turned the game around. First, Blake Bennett got an assist from Daniel Shields, then 2:40 later, Duarte struck for the first time on a man-up advantage. Alex Tindall assisted to cut the deficit to 4-3 with 11:11 left in the half.
Another man-up opportunity gave Daniel Shields an opportunity to get in the scoring column with 3:54 to even the match. The Storm's Justin Goodwin quickly turned the tables on the Trojans, winning the ensuing faceoff, then racing unabated to the goal for the first of his two markers.
In the final four minutes, both teams sent a flurry of shots at the goaltenders, scoring five times.
Duarte struck with 1:16 left with help from a Cameron Walsh assist, then Matt Devoy got an assist from Duarte to give Mount Olive its only lead of the day. Keegan Bal, who led all players with five goals, evened the match again with 11 seconds remaining before intermission.
Though the score was tied, Lake Erie was winning the battle of ground balls and turnovers. In the second half, the Storm turned that advantage into points. Lake Erie won 39 groundballs to just 21 for the Trojans. Lake Erie also won eight-of-12 face-offs in the second half, many of which were turned into fast break opportunities.
The Storm scored the first two goals of the third period before Nick Sanderson found the back of the net with 9:52 left in the quarter.
Heading into the final 15 minutes, the Trojans trailed just 9-7. The Storm struck three times in the first 1:45 of the period, however, to open up the lead. Duarte scored on a Matt Shields assist with 11:56 remaining for the Trojans' only goal.
In goal, Rocky Bowman finished with eight saves.
The Trojans return to action Friday and Saturday when Mount Olive travels to Florida for a weekend series. On Friday, the Trojans meet Saint Leo at 3 p.m., then on Saturday travel to Melbourne, Fla. For a 7 p.m. match with Florida Tech.
