Escalante Extends Hitting Streak To 42 Games But Top-Ranked Trojans Fall At Newberry 10-6

Box Score

Mount Olive junior catcher Geno Escalante extended his school-record hitting streak to 42 games and came within a single of hitting for the cycle for the second time this season, the nationally top-ranked Trojans saw their nine-game winning streak snapped with a 10-6 loss to Newberry in non-conference baseball Sunday at Newberry, S.C. Escalante, who was 3-for-5 with three runs batted in, moved into a tie for the fifth longest hitting streak in NCAA Division II baseball history.

The two teams wrap up their three-game series Monday with a doubleheader beginning at noon. Live Stats are currently unavailable due to internet issues, but updates are available via Twitter, courtesy Newberry.

The Trojans (42-8) never led after the Wolves took a 4-0 lead in the third. But Mount Olive fought back against starter Wesley Camp (3-4). Escalante's one-out double in the fourth extended his streak. He scored on a single by Jermaine Berry. Escalante and Berry accounted for half of the Trojans' 14 hits.

In the fifth, the Trojans pulled even. Will Bynum and Bryan Dunlavey led off with singles, then raced home on a single by Jacob Rogers and an Escalante triple.

The momentum did not last. The Wolves (20-29) took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth. The culprit for Newberry was reserve first baseman Caleb Brazell who blasted his first three home runs of the season. Brazell had appeared in just 11 games this season, recording just one hit. On Sunday, he took advantage of an opportunity, driving in seven runs. His two-run shot in the fifth proved to be the game-winning runs. In the seventh, he added a three-run shot for insurance.

Mount Olive tried to get back in the game late. In the seventh, the Trojans had runners on second and third with two outs but could not get a big hit. In the eighth, Berry scored an unearned run. In the ninth, Escalante's eighth homer cut the lead to five.

Conference Carolinas Pitcher of the Year Matt Dillon (9-1) suffered his first loss.

Monday's doubleheader concludes the Trojans' regular season. Mount Olive clinched a spot in the NCAA II Southeast Regional after winning the Conference Carolinas championship April 29. The regional takes place May 17-20. Site and pairings will be announced Sunday night.
