Men's Volleyball Defeats Limestone 3-1 In Regular Season Finale

Box Score

Adam Miracle and Alex Rivero led five players in double figures with 14 kills apiece as Mount Olive wrapped up regular season play with a 26-24, 26-28, 25-17, 25-20 victory over Limestone in Conference Carolinas men's volleyball Saturday at Kornegay Arena. John Nunns had 13 kills, while Lukas Hoelzl finished with 11 kills and Jack Tutty added 10.

The two teams will meet again April 15 at Gaffney, S.C., in the first round of the 2012 Conference Carolinas Men's Volleyball Tournament.

Mount Olive (16-13, 7-3 Conference Carolinas) fought off two set points in the opening set and scored the final four points to take a one-set lead. Rivero and Tutty combined for the final three points.

The Trojans rallied from a five-point deficit in the second set to take a 21-20 lead on Tutty's kill. Limestone (14-10, 7-3) used a block and a kill by Eric Zaun to go back on top 24-23. Mount Olive saved three set errors before a pair of errors gave Limestone the set and evened the match.

Mount Olive scored the first four points of the third set and led the entire way. After the Trojans built the lead to as many as eight points, a kill and an ace by Kevin Hart helped Limestone pull within 18-15. But that's as close as the Saints could get as Mount Olive scored the next three points on kills by Rivero, Hoelzl and Tutty.

The Trojans broke open a close fourth set as a pair of service aces by Nunns highlighted a 5-0 run and gave Mount Olive a 17-10 advantage. Limestone scored four of the next five points, but Miracle's kill and a block by Nunns and Jackson Metichecchia halted the Saints' run. Miracle recorded a kill on match point.

Metichecchia finished with 54 assists for the Trojans, while Nunns had a match-high three aces. Dan Arnold recorded 10 digs and Tutty led Mount Olive with three blocks.

Hart led a balanced Limestone attack with 10 kills to go with nine digs. Zaun finished with nine kills, while Derek Daley and Scott Warren each had eight kills and shared match-high honors with five blocks apiece.

Prior to the contest, Trojan sophomore middle blocker Jack Tutty was recognized for his Import Sports/AVCA National Player of the Week award he won in early March. Also, Trojan seniors Jackson Metichecchia, John Nunns and Alex Vazquez were honored during Senior Day festivities.

In addition, this year's Conference Carolinas All-Academic selections were recognized prior to the match. Five Mount Olive players and four Limestone players earned All-Academic honors.

This year's Conference Carolinas Tournament expands to four teams for the first time. Two-time defending champion Mount Olive is the No. 3 seed and Limestone is the No. 2 seed. The winner advances to the championship April 18 against the winner of the other semifinal between top-seeded Pfeiffer and No. 4 seed Lees-McRae. The higher remaining seed will host the title match.
