Box Score Geno Escalante extended his hitting streak to 33 games and drove in Mount Olive's first five runs as the nationally third-ranked Trojans broke away from a one-run game for a 13-2 victory over Barton in non-conference baseball Tuesday at Scarborough Field. Jacob Rogers, who leads the nation in runs, scored three runs as the Trojans posted their 28th win in their last 30 games.
Tuesday's game was dedicated to Jake May, a 17-year-old Eastern Wayne High School senior and member of the school's baseball team. Jake has been undergoing chemotherapy treatments for leukemia, which is currently in remission. Proceeds from all ticket sales went to Jake and his family, as did proceeds from food sales at the game by Hwy 55 Burgers, Shakes and Fries (formerly Andy's).
Jake is the son of Roger May, a former Mount Olive college student and later, an assistant baseball coach for the Trojans from 1988-95. Roger May then served as Barton's head baseball coach from 1995-99. Jake threw out the ceremonial first pitch and received a standing ovation from the Trojan and Bulldog fans in attendance.
Shortly after catching the pitch from Jake May, Escalante drove in the first hit of the game and kept his hitting streak going with an rbi-single up the middle to give Mount Olive (35-7) a 1-0 in the bottom of the first. After Barton (15-30) tied the game in the top of the second, Escalante's rbi-double in the bottom of the third plated Rogers and put the Trojans back on top to stay 2-1.
An infield error and a walk gave Mount Olive runners on first and second with nobody out in the bottom of the fifth. Escalante then drove a 1-1 pitch high over the right field foul pole for a three-run homer to extend the Trojans' lead to 5-1. The home run was Escalante's seventh of the season.
Mount Olive broke the game open with a seven-run sixth inning, highlighted by a two-run double down the left field line by Braden Reitano and a stand-up triple into the right field corner by Cameron Sherrer. The Trojans sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning.
Escalante needed only a triple to become the first Trojan to hit for the cycle twice in a career, let alone in the same season. But Escalante walked on four pitches in the sixth and hit into a force play to end the seventh.
Antonio Callaway, who entered Tuesday's game tied for third in the nation in runs scored and tied for sixth in stolen bases, scored three runs and stole a base. Callaway now has 60 runs scored and 33 stolen bases on the season. Rogers has 72 runs scored.
Trojan reliever Derek Justice (3-0) took over in the top of the second with one out and the bases loaded. Justice struck out the first batter he faced, but Chris Rawlings beat out an infield single to tie the game 1-1. Justice got a strikeout to end the inning and finished with six strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
The Trojans have defeated Barton in all three meetings this season, the first two in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader at Wilson, N.C. Tuesday's contest did not count towards the teams' conference records.
Mount Olive concludes regular season play this weekend as the Trojans play host to North Greenville in a three-game Conference Carolinas series. The two teams play a single game Friday at 6 p.m. and a doubleheader Saturday at noon. Mount Olive has already clinched the No. 1 seed in the 2012 Conference Carolinas Baseball Tournament, which is hosted by Barton and takes place April 26-29 at Wilson, N.C.
