Softball Sweeps Lees-McRae - Wins Conference Carolinas East Division

Box Score

Mount Olive swept a Conference Carolinas softball doubleheader at Lees-McRae, winning game one 10-5 and game two 3-2 as the Trojans clinched the Conference Carolinas East Division and the No. 2 seed in next weekend's conference tournament. Lauren Smith pitched three scoreless innings in relief in the opener for her third save in as many games and Christie Wright tossed a complete game three-hitter in the nightcap Sunday at Banner Elk, N.C. The sweep also gave Mount Olive its first 30-win season in five years.

The Trojans will face tournament host and No. 7 seed Coker Friday in the first round of the 2012 Conference Carolinas Tournament at Hartsville, S.C. Game time is noon.

Mount Olive (31-15, 17-5 Conference Carolinas) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game two as Katie Moore singled in a run and Robbin Kennedy scored on a throwing error on the play. Jennifer Jones had an rbi-single in the fifth as the Trojans extended their lead to 3-0.

Wright (7-6) retired the side in order in the first, second and fourth innings, working around leadoff singles in the third and fifth innings and a two-out walk in the sixth. She threw only 61 pitches through six scoreless innings before Trojan miscues led to two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Lees-McRae (13-34, 4-16) put runners on first and third as Jessica Smith led off with a single and Amanda Leonard reached on an infield error with one out. Wright fielded a comebacker for the second out but another infield error prolonged the inning and broke up the shutout as Smith scored the Bobcats' first run. Leonard came home on a passed ball to make it a one-run game, but Wright got an infield pop out to end the game.

Wright struck out two and walked two to record her fourth win in as many starts. She benefited from defensive help in the fifth when catcher Rebekah McDaniel threw out a Bobcat runner attempting to steal second.

In the first game, Mount Olive saw a 5-0 lead disappear before the Trojans took the lead for good with two unearned runs in the top of the fifth. Katie Devenuto's infield single and a throwing error brought in the first run and Danielle Mitchell's sacrifice fly gave the Trojans a 7-5 lead.

The Trojans loaded the bases in the sixth as Wright led off with a single, Jones drew a one-out walk and Devenuto reached on an error. A passed ball extended the lead to 8-5 and Kayla Voorhees capped the scoring with a two-run double.

Mount Olive scored four runs in the top of the first after loading the bases with nobody out. Kennedy drove in the first two runs with a double and after an rbi-groundout, Moore singled Kennedy home to give the Trojans a 4-0 lead.

McDaniel singled in a run in the top of the third and Mount Olive had a chance to add to the lead, but the Trojans left the bases loaded.

Sarah Saunders (6-1) limited Lees-McRae to an unearned run on two hits through three innings before three Trojan errors and a passed ball led to a four-run fourth inning as the Bobcats tied the game. Lori Fulmer's rbi-single was the Bobcats' only hit in the inning.

Smith took over to start the fifth inning and allowed only a one-out single in the sixth, retiring the side in order in the fifth and seventh innings. She struck out four of the 10 batters she faced. Smith, who entered this weekend with one save on the season, is now within one save of tying the school single-season record.

Mount Olive last reached the 30-win mark in 2007 when the Trojans posted a school record 39 wins and won the regular season conference championship. The Trojans, which swept a doubleheader at King Saturday, entered this weekend a half-game ahead of second-place Queens, which also swept a pair of conference doubleheaders over the weekend.

West Division champion North Greenville claimed the No. 1 seed by virtue of the highest conference winning percentage.

The eight-team double-elimination tournament runs through Sunday. The tournament champion earns an automatic bid to the Southeast Regional of the 2012 NCAA Division II Softball Championship.
