Lauren Smith Tosses 10th Shutout; Trojans Sweep Fayetteville State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Mount Olive freshman Lauren Smith tossed her third consecutive shutout for the second time this season, and Robbin Kennedy drove in a pair as the Trojans completed a doubleheader sweep of Fayetteville State 8-0 Tuesday afternoon in Fayetteville, N.C. In game one, the Trojans got a complete game from Christie Wright in an 8-1 win.

Smith (16-6) limited the Lady Falcons to just five hits, all singles, striking out six. Her teammates got her all the support she needed in the top of the first with the help of two Fayetteville State errors. Kennedy singled and moved to third on a pair of errors, then scored on a wild pitch.

The Trojans held the 1-0 lead until the fifth when Mount Olive blew the game open. Megan Ready delivered a one-out bunt single and Kennedy walked. Both runners raced home on a double by Wright. Jennifer Jones' single stretched the lead to 4-0.

In the sixth, the Trojans pushed across three more runs. With the bases empty and two outs, Anna Munizza reached on an error to keep the frame alive. Ragan Taylor and Ready followed with singles and an error stretched the lead to 6-0. Ready later scored on a wild pitch. An inning later, Munizza drove in an eighth run with a groundout.

Smith has not been scored upon in her last five appearances. Smith now has 14 complete games and a Conference Carolinas-leading 10 shutouts.

In the opener, the Trojans sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the seventh to blow open a close game. Mount Olive led just 3-1 heading into the final inning, but a walk to Katie Moore and singles by Rebekah McDaniel and Katie Devenuto loaded the bases for the top of the batting order with one out.

Devenuto was the first of five consecutive batters to reach safely. Kayla Voorhees reached on an error, Elizabeth Overman walked to force in a run, Danielle Mitchell reached on another error and Kennedy singled home a pair with her third hit of the game.

Wright (5-6) kept the Lady Falcon line-up in check much of the game. She allowed just three singles in the contest. The run she allowed was unearned. She finished with nine strikeouts and no walks.

Mount Olive (26-15) struck first with a pair of third inning runs. McDaniel led off with a single and scored along with Voorhees two outs later on Overman's RBI-single and an error.

In the sixth, the Trojans stretched the lead back to two runs on Wright's two-out single.

Mount Olive concludes regular-season play this weekend when the Trojans travel to King for a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. On Sunday, the Trojans play a pair at Lees-McRae beginning at 2 p.m.
