Box Score 2 Robbin Kennedy drove in five runs with two homers and Sarah Saunders went the distance for her third win in as many starts this week as Mount Olive defeated Limestone 7-1 in game one of a Conference Carolinas softball doubleheader Sunday at Gaffney, S.C. Saunders scattered eight hits and held the Saints scoreless after the first inning.
Kennedy powered the offense again in game two, driving in four runs with a home run and a double as the Trojans completed the sweep with a 5-0 victory. Lauren Smith tossed a six-hitter for her seventh shutout of the season.
After Kayla Voorhees beat out a bunt single to lead off game one, Kennedy homered to left-center to put Mount Olive (22-14, 10-4 Conference Carolinas) ahead to stay 2-0. Limestone got on the scoreboard with two outs in the bottom of the first on Kirstyn Burleson's solo home run, but that was all the Saints would get against Saunders (4-0).
Saunders, who had missed the first month of the season with an injury, had a bend-but-not-break performance. After retiring the side in order in the fourth, Limestone had runners on first and second with two outs in the fifth. Saunders finished the inning with a come-backer.
In the sixth inning, Jordan Smith tripled with one out, but Saunders retired the next two batters on foul outs to leave Smith stranded in the third. Limestone (15-23, 5-7) had runners on first and second with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh, but got help from her infield when the Trojans nearly turned a triple play.
Second baseman Jesse Crist caught a line drive and threw to first. The runner got back in time, but first baseman got the lead runner at second for a 4-6-3 double play. Saunders finished the game with a groundout.
Saunders struck out one and walked none.
An error brought in a Trojan run in the top of the second and Kalie Smith doubled in a run in the sixth to extend Mount Olive's lead to 4-1. Kennedy gave the Trojans an added cushion with a three-homer in the top of the seventh for her first collegiate two-home run game.
Kennedy went 3-for-4, while Smith and Voorhees had two hits apiece to account for all seven Trojan hits.
Kennedy provided Mount Olive with a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with a two-run double after singles by Voorhees and Overman to start the game. Kennedy scored on an error to make it a 3-0 lead.
The score remained the same until Danielle Mitchell kept the fifth inning alive with a two-out triple, her conference-leading third of the season. Kennedy followed with her third home run on the day and fourth of the season. She had eight homers in 2011.
Lauren Smith (13-6) weathered storms early on as Limestone left two runners stranded in each of the first four innings. She also benefited from a line drive double play in the second. Smith retired 10 of the final 11 batters she faced, retiring the side in order in the fifth and sixth innings. She struck out two and survived four walks.
The doubleheader sweep over Limestone was the Trojans' first since the 2008 season.
Mount Olive returns to action Tuesday as the Trojans head to Wilson, N.C., to take on Barton in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader. Game time is 4 p.m.
