Jacob Rogers homered twice in each game, and Chris Hinton tossed his first complete game as 14th-ranked Mount Olive swept a non-conference doubleheader against fifth-ranked Catawba Wednesday night in Salisbury, N.C. In the opener, Antonio Callaway's grand slam highlighted an eight-run third in a 17-12 win. In the nightcap, Hinton tossed a six-hitter for his second win, 11-1.
In the opener, Mount Olive fell behind early. Chris Dula's homer gave the Indians a 2-0 lead in the first. An inning later, back-to-back blasts by Greg Lawson and Keaton Hawks stretched the lead to 6-1.
In the top of the third, the Trojans showed off their long-ball prowess as well. Trailing 6-4 after RBI-singles by Jermaine Berry and Nick Gaeta, Antonio Callaway delivered a grand slam down the left-field line. Moments later, Rogers followed with his first homer of the evening to cap off an eight-run rally.
Rogers' second homer, a three-run shot to right in the fifth stretched the lead to 13-6. Then the Indians came storming back.
In the bottom of the fifth, Catawba sent 10 batters to the plate in a five-run outburst that put the Indians back within 13-11. Three singles and three walks fueled the rally.
The Trojans put the game away in the sixth with a four-run frame. An RBI-single by Geno Escalante and a three-run homer by Mike Mercurio highlighted the inning.
Skylar Sopotnick (2-0) tossed 2 1/3 innings to get the win, while Jake Moser came in with 2 2/3 innings for his first save. The teams combined to hit eight home runs, four by each squad.
In the nightcap, Hinton (2-0) calmed the Indian bats, allowing a solo homer to Garrett Furr in the first for Catawba's lone run. Hinton twice worked out of bases-loaded jams. In the sixth, he forced a double play grounder from J. J. Janikowski to end a threat.
Mount Olive (23-7) broke the game open early, scoring five times after Indian starter Nick Lomascolo (5-3 retired the first two batters. Rogers, Berry and Escalante singled, Bradon Reitano walked and Daniel Oliver delivered a three-run double. Cameron Sherrer also doubled home a run in the frame.
An inning later, Rogers belted his third homer of the night down the left field line. In the fourth he sent his fourth blast down to right. Rogers finished the doubleheader with 11 homers to lead Conference Carolinas. He now has nine homers in the month of March.
The Trojans provided more than enough offense for Hinton, who struck out five while walking just one.
Sherrer later added an RBI-double to finish 3-for-3.
Mount Olive continues its road trip this weekend with a three-game series against St. Andrews in Laurinburg, N.C. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon and a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
