Box Score 2 Jake Moser tossed eight innings of seven-hit ball and Geno Escalante and Antonio Callaway drove in three runs apiece as Mount Olive defeated Barton 14-1 in game one of a Conference Carolinas doubleheader Friday afternoon in Wilson, N.C. In the nightcap, the Trojans Jacob Rogers slugged a three-run homer and Matt Dillon recorded his first win in a 12-2 win.
Moser (4-0) allowed just one unearned run and did not walk a batter in remaining perfect on the season. Freshman Barinder Rakkar pitched a perfect ninth to close out the win.
The Trojans (8-5 overall, 3-1 Conference Carolinas) got all the runs they needed in the top of the first. Mike Mercurio was hit by a pitch and stole second to lead off the inning, then scored when Rogers reached on an error. A walk and a passed ball later, Rogers scored on a sacrifice fly by Jermaine Berry.
In the second, Mount Olive put the game away with a seven-run outburst. Escalante delivered a bases loaded single to bring home two runs and Callaway added a two-run, two-out double to cap off the frame. The Trojans also benefitted from three walks, a hit batsman and a balk. Mount Olive needed just three hits to score the seven runs.
Singles by Bradon Reitano, Rogers and Escalante led to two more runs in the third to extend the lead to 11-0.
Barton (5-12, 0-4) scored its only run in the fourth on an error, then a two-out single by Zac Crumpler.
Mount Olive added two runs in the sixth when Cameron Sherrer singled and Matt Patrone walked ahead of a double by Mercurio and an RBI-groundout by Reitano. In the seventh, the Trojans picked up an unearned run.
In game two, Barton held a 1-0 lead before Mount Olive came alive with an eight-run third.
Bryan Dunlavey led off with a single and stole second, then Reitano walked setting the stage for Rogers' third homer of the year. Mount Olive was not done. Berry and Escalante singled and Daniel Coffey was hit by a pitch. Callaway doubled home two more, then Dunlavey finished what he started with a three-run double.
Dillon (1-0) continued to pitch effectively, allowing six hits and two walks in five innings. Relievers Skylar Sopotnick and Nolan Lancaster closed out Dillon's first win as a Trojan.
Mount Olive blew the game open in the sixth, adding four runs on four hits. Escalante singled in one run, then Callaway, Sherrer and Dunlavey brought in one run apiece.
Dunlavey drove in four runs, while Callaway was 4-for-4 with three RBI for the second consecutive game.
Due to inclement weather in the region, there is only one game scheduled for Saturday. The teams will conclude their three-game series with a nine-inning contest beginning at noon.
