Softball Takes Conference Unbeaten North Greenville To Wire In Doubleheader Loss

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Kayla Voorhees scored the tying run in the sixth inning and the go-ahead run in the eighth, but a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning was the difference as Mount Olive fell to conference unbeaten North Greenville 4-3 in extra innings in game one of a Conference Carolinas softball doubleheader Saturday at Tigerville, S.C. Megan Ready belted a three-run homer in game two, but North Greenville rallied to win 7-5 to complete the sweep and extend its winning streak to 12.

In game one, Mount Olive (16-12, 5-3 Conference Carolinas) tied the game 2-2 in the top of the sixth inning as Voorhees advanced to second on a wild pitch after hitting into a force play. Danielle Mitchell worked the count full before hitting a single to right, driving in Voorhees.

Voorhees was placed on second to start the top of the eighth inning and advanced to third on Mitchell's sacrifice. After North Greenville starting pitcher Rachel Glazebrook (7-1) got a strikeout for the second out, Voorhees came home on a passed ball to give Mount Olive a 3-2 lead. Glazebrook recorded her ninth strikeout of the game to end the inning.

Trojan starter Christie Wright (3-5) recorded eight strikeouts of her own, while allowing only one, two earned runs and five hits through seven innings. Wright retired the side in order in the sixth and seventh innings to send the game to extra innings. After a Crusader runner was placed on second, Wright retired the first two batters on a strikeout and groundout before Nagel ended the game with her third home run of the season.

Mount Olive scored the first run of the game in the top of the second when Rebekah McDaniel singled with one out and Beth Overman and Kalie Smith followed with back-to-back walks to load the bases. Voorhees drew the third consecutive walk to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead. But Glazebrook got out of the jam with a strikeout and a flyout to left on a 10-pitch at bat.

North Greenville (13-3, 10-0) went on top in the bottom of the fifth as rbi-singles by Kimberly Robertson and Glazebrook gave the Crusaders a 2-1 lead.

Mount Olive outhit North Greenville 7-6 and drew seven bases on balls, but the Trojans finished the game with a season-high 14 runners left on base.

In game two, Mount Olive overcame an early 2-1 deficit when McDaniel was hit by a pitch to lead off the top of the second and Overman followed with a walk. One out later, Ready sent a 1-2 pitch over the centerfield fence for her first collegiate home run to give the Trojans a 4-2 lead.

Mount Olive extended the lead to 5-2 with a two-out rally in the top of the fourth. Mitchell was hit by a pitch and Robbin Kennedy drew a walk to keep the inning alive. Mitchell came home on Jennifer Jones' rbi-single.

Trojan starting pitcher Lauren Smith (10-5) allowed two unearned runs on three Mount Olive errors in the bottom of the first. But with runners on second and third and nobody out, Smith struck out the next two batters and got a groundout to end the inning. Smith went on to retire nine of 10 batters over the next three innings and got the first two batters out in the bottom of the fifth before running into trouble.

After a two-out single by Sarah Armstrong, Glazebrook hit a two-run homer to pull North Greenville within 5-4. After the next two batters reached, Kari Taylor singled to tie the game 5-5. With the bases loaded, Kansas Wofford delivered a two-run single to put the Crusaders ahead to stay.

The Trojans had the tying run on base and the go-ahead run at the plate in the top of the seventh as Jones led off with a single and Overman drew a two-out walk. But Crusader relief pitcher Sarah Armstrong, who took over after the second inning, ended Mount Olive's threat on a flyout to left.

Mitchell and Voorhees had two hits apiece for Mount Olive in game one, while Jones and Kennedy each collected two hits in the second game.

Mount Olive returns to action Wednesday as the Trojans play host to Belmont Abbey in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader. Game time is 2 p.m. at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field.
