Box Score 2 Three-run homers by Jennifer Jones and Kalie Smith staked Mount Olive to a seven-run lead as the Trojans defeated defending conference champion Erskine 9-5 in game one of a Conference Carolinas softball doubleheader Friday at Due West, S.C. Christie Wright went the distance and scattered six hits in the win.
Erskine handed Mount Olive its first conference loss and ended the Trojans five-game winning streak with a 6-1 victory in game two. Smith homered with one out in the top of the seventh to prevent the shutout.
In game one, Rebekah McDaniel led off the bottom of the second with a double and Beth Overman reached on a sacrifice attempt when Erskine was unable to get McDaniel out. Kalie Smith's sacrifice advanced the runners and Kayla Voorhees' double brought both runners home to give Mount Olive (16-10, 5-1 Conference Carolinas) a 3-1 lead.
Robbin Kennedy drew a two-out walk and Jennifer Jones cleared the bases to extend the Trojans' lead to 6-1. Jones' home run was her second of the year.
McDaniel and Overman drew back-to-back one-out walks in the top of third and Smith, the Trojans' No. 9 batter in the lineup, blasted a three-run homer to make the score 9-2. The home run was also the second this season for Smith.
Wright (3-4) was given a 1-0 lead before throwing her first pitch as Voorhees and Danielle Mitchell both singled to lead off the game and Kennedy's single brought home Voorhees. But Erskine (7-13, 5-3) tied the game on Larissa Shannon's two-out solo home run.
The Flying Fleet added a run in the fifth and Ericka McCarson hit a two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Wright sealed the win with a groundout to first. Wright struck out three and walked only one.
In game two, Erskine led 3-0 after two innings and broke the game open with three unearned runs in the fourth. Mount Olive committed two errors in the inning, while Shannon and Bailey Thornton had rbi-doubles.
The Trojans had an opportunity in the top of the first as Voorhees and McDaniel both singled and Kennedy drew a walk. But Voorhees, who entered Friday's twinbill with 10 stolen bases in 12 attempts, was caught stealing before McDaniel's at bat. Erskine pitcher Heather Richey ended the inning with a force out and a strikeout.
Mount Olive threatened in the top of the sixth as Kennedy led off with a single and Wright and pinch-hitter Tiffany Hawley drew two-out walks. But Richey recorded her third strikeout to end the threat. Richey added two strikeouts in the seventh inning.
Trojan starting pitcher Lauren Smith (10-4) suffered her first conference loss of the season and allowed her first runs in conference play. Smith had pitched 15 consecutive scoreless inning and tossed two complete game shutouts before allowing a leadoff home run to McCarson in the bottom of the first. Sarah Saunders took over for Smith with one out in the fourth and pitched the final 2 2/3 innings.
Mount Olive concludes its weekend trip to Upstate South Carolina Saturday as the Trojans head to Tigerville, S.C., for a Conference Carolinas doubleheader against first-year-conference member North Greenville. Game time is noon.
