Box Score 2 Robbin Kennedy gunned down the potential winning run in the bottom of the seventh and scored the game winner for Mount Olive in the top of the eighth as the Trojans rallied from a two-run deficit for a 3-2 extra-inning win in game one of a Conference Carolinas softball doubleheader Wednesday at Hartsville, S.C. Lauren Smith pitched two scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win.
The Trojans completed the sweep with an 11-0 victory in the nightcap as Smith tossed a two-hitter for her sixth shutout of the season. First-inning two-run homers by Kennedy and Katie Moore gave Smith all the run support she needed.
Mount Olive starting pitcher Christie Wright allowed only a fourth-inning single in six innings pitched in game one, but the Trojans trailed 2-0. Mount Olive (15-9, 4-0 Conference Carolinas) got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth without benefit of a hit as Kennedy drew a leadoff walk and stole second. Jennifer Jones' line drive went off the third baseman's glove, allowing Kennedy to score and pull the Trojans within 2-1.
The Trojans had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the seventh as Rebekah McDaniel was hit by a pitch, Tiffany Hawley reached on an error and Danielle Mitchell reached on a bunt single. Pinch-runner Lauren McGrath came home on Beth Overman's sacrifice fly to tie the game 2-2.
Smith (9-3) took over in the top of the seventh, but Coker got runners on first and second when Logan Cox beat out an infield single and Clarissa Suttle reached on an error. Sarah Rountree singled to center and Cox tried to score the winning run from second. But Kennedy's throw was right on the money and McDaniel put the tag on as the game went to extra innings.
Kennedy was placed on second by virtue of the international tie-breaker rule and advanced to third on a wild pitch with one out. Kennedy scored easily on Jones' groundout to the right side to put Mount Olive ahead for the first time.
A sacrifice moved Coker's runner from second to third, but Smith struck out the next two batters to seal the win.
Smith started game two and received a scare in the bottom of the first when Sydney Weatherford tripled with one out. Smith struck out the next two batters to keep Coker (12-14, 6-8) off the scoreboard on her way to retiring 20 of the final 22 batters. A Coker runner reached base on a third-strike wild pitch in the fourth and a leadoff single in the sixth. Smith struck out six and walked none.
Mount Olive jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first as Mitchell led off with a single and Kennedy belted her first home run of the season. Jones singled with two outs and Moore followed with her second homer of the season.
The Trojans added a run in the third on Wright's sacrifice fly and Anna Munizza's sixth-inning rbi-single extended Mount Olive's lead to 6-0. The Trojans broke the game open with a five-run seventh inning, highlighted by Jones' two-run double and rbi-singles by Kalie Smith and Kayla Voorhees.
The Trojans travel to Upstate South Carolinas this weekend for a pair of Conference Carolinas doubleheaders. Mount Olive goes to Due West, S.C., for a 2 p.m. date at Erskine, then heads to Tigerville, S.C., Saturday to take on first-year conference member North Greenville. Game time is noon.
