Baseball Pounds Out 20 Hits In 14-4 Win Over King

Box Score

Mount Olive pounded King pitchers for 20 hits and Derek Justice earned his first win as the Trojans earned a series win over the Tornado with a 14-4 Conference Carolinas baseball win Sunday afternoon at Scarborough Field.

The Trojans (12-6 overall, 6-2 Conference Carolinas) spotted the conference newcomers a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first, but Mount Olive hurler Talton Cherry recovered to retire 10 of the final 11 batters he faced. Cherry allowed just two hits and a walk in four innings of work.

Mount Olive took the lead for good in the bottom of the first when Geno Escalante singled home Mike Mercurio, then Jermaine Berry tripled into the right field corner to bring home two more runs. A Bradon Reitano groundout gave the Trojans a 4-2 lead after one inning.

The Trojans batted around again in the third. Berry singled and Reitano walked bringing Nick Gaeta to the plate. Gaeta bunted hard back to the mound, but Tornado hurler Danny Laperna (0-2) threw wildly to third trying to cut down the lead runner. Brandon Sherrer followed with a bunt single ahead of Bryan Dunlavey who slapped a hit to right to give Mount Olive an 8-2 cushion. Antonio Callaway capped off the rally with a two-run hit of his own.

Leading 11-2, Mount Olive turned the pitching duties over to Justice (1-0), making just his second appearance of the season. A two-out walk in the fifth gave Tornado lead-off hitter Garrett Cook a chance to bat and he slammed a two-run homer to left, his sixth blast of the season to tie him for the conference lead.

An inning later, Justice found himself in more trouble. An error, a single and a walk loaded the bases with no outs. Justice struck out Bryant Walker and Brandon Reed, then coaxed a fly out from Jarrod Payne to end the threat.

The Trojans added an unearned run on Escalante's sacrifice fly in the fifth, then singles by Gaeta, Sherrer and Dunlavey opened the sixth. Mercurio, one of three Trojans with three hits in the contest delivered a sacrifice fly.

Berry and Sherrer joined Mercurio with three hits apiece. The 20 hits marked a season-high for Mount Olive, which had 17 in Saturday's doubleheader finale against the Tornado (12-8 overall, 5-4 Conference Carolinas).

Mount Olive steps out of conference play this week as Virginia State comes to Scarborough Field Tuesday for a 3 p.m. start. California (Pa.) will make its second trip to Mount Olive Thursday. First pitch is 1 p.m.
