Box Score 2 Mount Olive completed a clean sweep of the 8th Annual York College Men's Volleyball Classic Saturday, defeating Wells College and host York to claim the title for the second time in three years. The Trojans won all four of its matches in the two-day event in Jamaica, N.Y. without surenduring a set.
In Saturday afternoon's championship match, tournament Most Valuable Player Jackson Metichechhia finished with a game-high 36 assists and the Trojans (12-12) rolled to their sixth consecutive victory 25-15, 25-11, 25-16 over York.
Joining Metichechhia on the all-tournament team was junior Adam Miracle, who added 10 kills and six digs in the finale.
Mount Olive wasted little time jumping on top against the Cardinals. A kill by Lukas Hoelzl and an ace by another all-tournament member Alex Rivero put the Trojans in front 11-3 in the first set. Miracle had two kills and Tim Ebbecke added another during the run that put York in a hole it could not climb out of.
In the second set, Mount Olive used a 60-percent attack percentage to take a commanding lead. Miracle and Rivero had three kills apiece and Hoelzl, Metichechhia and Jack Tutty had one apiece as the Trojans built an 18-5 advantage.
In the clincher, the Cardinals never led, but gave Mount Olive quite a fight. Kills by Rivero and Hoelzl gave the Trojans an 18-11 advantage, but York fought back. A service error and three attack errors against Mount Olive, followed by a service ace by Edner Geffard closed the gap to 18-16.
After a Mount Olive timeout, the Trojans regrouped an reeled off the final seven points of the match. Rivero delivered two kills and Tutty added two of his own to close out the tournament.
Rivero led the Trojans with 11 kills, while Ben Casado added five digs. Bryan Williams led York (13-10) with eight kills, four digs and two blocks.
In Saturday's first match, the Trojans defeated Wells 25-18, 25-8, 25-10. Wells (2-11) earned their first two wins in their program's history in the tournament, but Mount Olive got kills from Alex Vazquez and 31 assists from Casado in continuing its winning streak.
In Friday's matches, Mount Olive set a school record for fewest points allowed in a match and recorded the fourth-highest team hitting percentage in school history on its way to a perfect 2-0 mark on day one. The Trojans defeated Medger Evers 25-9, 25-6, 25-9 in the opening match and followed with a 25-15, 25-8, 25-12 victory over Mount St. Vincent.
Mount Olive's win over Medger Evers marked the first time in school history the Trojans have held a team to single digits in all three sets, allowing only 24 total points for the match. Mount Olive recorded a .587 team hitting percentage with 45 kills and only eight errors in 63 attempts. The school record is .632 against SUNYIT in 2010.
Tutty led the Trojans with 11 kills and no errors in 13 attempts for a hitting percentage of .847, the sixth highest single-match hitting percentage in school history by a player with at least 10 kills. Hoelzl (eight kills) and Rivero (six kills) each recorded a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage.
Vazquez added a career-high eight blocks as Mount Olive compiled two solo blocks and 26 block assists for a team total of 15.0 blocks. Renzo Rossato had three of the Trojans' 10 service aces.
Against Mount St. Vincent, the Trojans Metichechhia's 41 assists helped the Trojans amass at 57.4 percent attack percentage en route to a three-set win.
Vazquez delivered 11 kils without an error; Miracle had six digs, while teammate Tyler Carnes added five. Ebbecke had eight block assists.
