Men's Volleyball Pushes No. 7 Lewis To 4 Sets

Box Score

Mount Olive concluded its Spring Break trip across the Midwest Tuesday night with a stop at nationally seventh-ranked Lewis. The Trojans gave the Flyers all they wanted, pushing a team with nine wins against Division I opponents before falling 25-15, 25-19, 23-25, 25-18 in Romeoville, Illi. The Trojans (6-12) got 13 kills from Alex Rivero and 12 more from Adam Miracle in the loss.

After splitting their first four matches on their road trip, the Trojans were looking to wrap up Spring Break with a big win. After dropping the first two sets, then falling behind 7-3 in the third, things were not looking good. Then things turned around for Mount Olive.

A kill by Rivero and two service errors by the Flyers brought the Trojans even. Lewis (13-3) regained the lead before a Tim Ebbecke kill tied the set 12-12. The set was tied three more times before the Trojans took their first lead at 21-20. Again, Lewis tied the set then took three times, all on kills by Geoff Powell.

With the score tied 23-23, a service error followed by an attack error kept the Trojans alive and forced a fourth game.

In the clincher, the teams continued their back-and-forth play before Lewis opened up a five-point lead. Four different players recorded kills during a run that left the Flyers ahead 15-10. Kills by Miracle, Rivero and Jack Tutty gave Mount Olive hope, but the Flyers continued to pull away. The Trojans got no closer than four the rest of the way.

Jackson Metichechhia led the Trojans with 29 assists and four digs, while Tutty added five blocks.

The Trojans return to Conference Carolinas play Saturday as Mount Olive plays host to Lees-McRae. Match time is 3 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
