Men's Volleyball Sweeps Tri-Meet At Hannibal-LaGrange

Mount Olive continued it Spring Break trip across the Midwest Monday night, stopping over in Hannibal, Missouri for a volleyball tri-meet against Missouri Valley and host Hannibal-LaGrange. By the end of the evening, the Trojans returned to their winning ways posting a pair of victories.

In the opener against Missouri Valley, the Trojans (5-11) got 17 kills from Adam Miracle and 19 digs from Dan Arnold in a 25-20, 26-24, 25-16 win.

In game one, Mount Olive trailed 9-8 when a service ace by Jackson Metichechhia turned the tide in favor of the Trojans. Tim Ebbecke followed with a kill, then attack errors by the Vikings propelled Mount Olive to an 18-13 advantage.

The Vikings (12-6) got as close as 19-16 before consecutive kills by Miracle and Jack Tutty put the set away.

In the second set, the Trojans built a 10-6 lead early only to watch the Vikings rally behind five errors by Mount Olive. Trailing 16-12, the Trojans reeled off seven straight points, including two kills by Miracle, another by Alex Rivero and three attack errors by the Vikings gave Mount olive a 19-16 advantage.

The lead changed hands five more times before kills by Miracle and Rivero closed out the set.

In the clincher, kills by Miracle and Ebbecke capped a five-point run to end the set.

In the nightcap, Miracle had 19 kills and Ebbecke recorded a career-high 10 blocks – one short of tying a school record – as Mount Olive held off event host Hannibal-LaGrange 25-16, 24-26, 25-16, 30-28. Ebbecke became only the fourth Trojan in men's volleyball history to record at least 10 blocks in a match. Mount Olive's 16.5 team blocks is the fifth-highest single match total in school history.

Mount Olive trailed by as many as four points in the fourth set before a block by Quaid Martin and Tutty tied the set 23-23. The Trojans saved a pair of set points, but Hannibal-LaGrange – also called the Trojans - then fought off three Mount Olive match points. Alex Vazquez's kill broke a 28-28 tie and Lukas Hoelzl's kill was the match-winner.

In the first set, Ebbecke and Miracle each had two kills and a block during a run of nine unanswered points to break a 9-9 tie. The Trojans appeared to be on their way to taking a two-set lead, rallying from an early five-point deficit to go up 24-22 on Ebbecke's kill. But Jake Wollenberg recorded kills on three consecutive points and Hannibal-LaGrange evened the set on a Trojan error.

The two teams exchanged three-point leads before Miracle's service ace capped a 5-0 run and gave Mount Olive a 16-12 lead. The margin never fell below three points and Mount Olive scored seven of the final nine points of the set.

Hoelzl and Vazquez finished with eight kills apiece for Mount Olive, while Martin (22) and Jackson Metichecchia (20) combined for 42 assists. Defensively, Dan Arnold had 12 digs and Vazquez finished with five blocks. Miracle and Tutty added four blocks apiece.

Wollenberg led all players with 26 kills for Hannibal-LaGrange.
