Men's Volleyball Falls in Five Sets To Quincy

Mount Olive pushed host Quincy University to the edge of defeat Saturday night. But the Hawks rallied from three points down in the tiebreaker to escape with a 25-21, 26-28, 25-20, 23-25, 15-11 decision in Quincy, Illi. Alex Rivero delivered 16 kills, just two shy of his season-high, and Dan Arnold added 18 digs for the Trojans.

The Trojans (4-11) found themselves in trouble in the fourth set, trailing two sets to one, then watching the Hawks rally to tie the set 20-20. The Hawks pulled even twice more before Mount Olive forced a deciding fifth set.

A service error by Quincy (12-4) gave the Trojans to lead for good. A kill by Jack Tutty and another by Miracle gave the set to Mount Olive.

In the tie-breaker, the Trojans raced out to a 4-0 lead on four attack errors by Quincy to start the set. Kills by Tim Ebbecke and Jackson Metichechhia kept Mount Olive ahead.

Trailing 9-5, however, Quincy made its move. Kills by John Panger and Ryan Lehmann pulled the Hawks even again, then after a Miracle kill gave Mount Olive the advantage, the Hawks reeled off four straight points, three on attack errors by Mount Olive, to win the match.

The teams split the first two sets. In the second, the teams were tied 14 times before Mount Olive won the set with back-to-back kills by Rivero. Quincy was at set point at 24, 25 and 26. Each time the Trojans fought them off. Twice, Rivero kills kept the match alive, both on assists from Metichechhia.

Metichechhia finished with 45 assists in the match.

Mount Olive continues its Spring Break trek through the Midwest on Monday when the Trojans travel top Hannibal, Mo. to take part in the Hannibal-LaGrange Tri-Match. Mount Olive meets Missouri Valley Monday at 4 p.m., then meet Hannibal-LaGrange at 6 p.m.
