Alex Rivero, Adam Miracle and Lukas Hoelzl recorded double-figures in kills, and Mount Olive rallied from a slow start to post a 20-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-17 Conference Carolinas men's volleyball win over King Friday night at Kornegay Arena. The victory was the second in as many days to bring the Trojans within two games in the loss column of conference leaders Pfeiffer and Lees-McRae.
Friday night's match-up was a re-match of the 2011 conference championship, won by the Trojans in three sets. Mount Olive (4-9 overall, 3-2 in Conference Carolinas) had yet to beat the Tornado in the regular season. After King (5-8, 0-2) pulled away late in the first set to take a 1-0 lead, it appeared the trend would continue.
Mount Olive came back to win the next three sets. In the second set, the Trojans never trailed. Leading 11-7, Alex Vazquez delivered a kill that propelled the Trojans on an 11-2 run. Miracle delivered two kills during the run, then a Miracle service ace made it 22-9. Rivero finished the equalizer with two kills.
In the third set, there was no pulling away for either team. Neither team led by more than three points before kills by Miracle and Tim Ebbecke put the Trojans ahead 2-1.
In the clincher, the Tornado had three attack errors wrapped around kills by John Nunns and Rivero as Mount Olive raced out to a 7-2 lead. King got as close as two at 12-10, and was still within 18-15 when Mount Olive put the match away.
An ace by Hoelzl a kill by Miracle and another by Ebbecke brought the Trojans to match point. Miracle's 13 kill of the night finished off the Trojan victory.
Rivero finished with 14 kills; while Hoelzl added 10. Miracle and Metichechhia finished with four digs apiece. Metichechhia also had 45 assists.
King got 10 kills from Matthew Harper and 36 assists from Ned Parker.
The Trojans travel to Harrisonburg, Va. Saturday to play their third and fourth matches in three days. At 5 p.m., Mount Olive will meet host Eastern Mennonite University, then will meet Rust College at 7 p.m.
