Men's Volleyball Sweeps Barton To Even Conference Volleyball Record

Mount Olive evened its conference record Thursday as five players recorded at least five kills as the Trojans swept Barton 25-11, 25-10, 25-11 in Conference Carolinas men's volleyball in Wilson, N.C. The Trojans never trailed during the evening after giving up the first point each game. An attack percentage of 54 percent allowed Mount Olive to reel off long scoring runs each set.

Junior Adam Miracle led a strong team effort by the Trojans (3-9 overall, 2-2 Conference Carolinas) with 11 kills. Lukas Hoelzl added eight kills and a team-high 12 digs, while Jackson Metichechhia finished with 37 assists.

In the opening set, Mount Olive took command early. The Trojans reeled off an 11-2 run to take a 12-4 lead. Jack Tutty had half of his eight kills during the spurt, John Nunns had two kills and Metichechhia had six assists.

Barton (0-8, 0-5) was unable to mount a serious rally as Mount Olive was able to keep the Bulldogs from scoring more than two points in a row in the set. In fact, only once the entire match was Barton able to score more than two points in a possession.

In the second set, the Trojans led just 8-6 when Nunns' kill started a 9-0 run. Alex Rivero had two kills, and Miracle had one as Mount Olive pulled away. Miracle added two more kills before then end of the set, and Rivero, Tutty and Metichechhia added a kill apiece to end the set.

In the clincher, Mount Olive broke a 4-4 tie with a Hoelzl kill and two Barton attack errors. Rivero and Hoelzl added kills and a Rivero ace blew the set open 11-4.

The Bulldogs closed within 14-8 before Miracle had back-to-back kills, and Barton followed with five errors to end the match.

Jordan Robison finished with six kills for Barton.

The contest began a stretch of four matches in three days for Mount Olive. Friday night, King College comes to Kornegay Arena for a 7 p.m. start. On Saturday, the Trojans travel to Harrisonburg, Va. to take part in a tri-meet at Eastern Mennonite University. At 5 p.m., Mount Olive takes on host EMU. At 7 p.m., the Trojans take on Rust College.
