Box Score Alex Rivero matched his career high with 18 kills for the second consecutive match, but it wasn't enough to prevent Mount Olive from suffering its second straight five-set loss as the Trojans fell to Limestone 21-25, 25-21, 17-25, 25-18, 15-10 in Conference Carolinas men's volleyball Saturday at Gaffney, S.C. Adam Miracle notched a double-double for the Trojans with 11 kills and 11 digs.
Mount Olive (2-9, 1-2 Conference Carolinas) took two of the first three sets, but lost the fourth set and never led in the fifth. Jack Tutty's kill pulled the Trojans within 9-7, but Limestone (5-2, 2-0) went on a 5-1 run to set up match point. Mount Olive stayed alive on a pair of Limestone errors, but the Saints sealed the win on Scott Warren's 12th kill of the match.
In the first set, Mount Olive broke an 11-11 tie on a Limestone service error and the Trojans led the rest of the way. Lukas Hoelzl recorded a kill on set point. Limestone scored six of the final seven points of the second set to even the match at a set apiece.
A kill and an ace by Rivero on back-to-back points highlighted a 7-1 run in the third set as Mount Olive turned a two-point lead into a 23-15 advantage. Miracle had a kill on set point. Mount Olive led 13-10 in the fourth set after a block by Rivero and John Nunns. But Limestone on Trojan errors on six consecutive points to build a 20-16 lead. Kevin Hart's kill and a Trojan attack error on set point set the match to the final set.
Tutty finished with nine kills and only one error in 15 attempts for a .553 hitting percentage. Trojan setter Quaid Martin recorded a season-high 43 assists, while Rivero served both Trojan aces. Defensively, Ben Rasado had a team-high 12 digs and Nunns led the Trojans with six blocks.
Hart recorded a double-double of his own for Limestone with team highs of 17 kills and 14 digs. Andrew Miller added 12 kills, while Warren was one of three Saints players with six blocks.
Saturday's loss extends Mount Olive's losing skid to seven, the first five losses coming at the hands of Division I opposition. This past Tuesday, the Trojans fell to Pfeiffer in five sets in conference play.
Mount Olive returns to action Thursday as the Trojans travel to Wilson, N.C., to take on Barton in a Conference Carolinas match-up. Mount Olive has two wins over the Bulldogs this season, one in conference play and both at Kornegay Arena. Match time is 7:30 p.m.
