Box Score Carly White saved three set points in the final set with two kills and a block, and Danielle Plante served her match-high fourth ace on match point and Mount Olive capitalized on what may have been the most bizarre play of the season as the Trojans celebrated Senior Day and ended the 2012 season with a 25-23, 25-20, 26-24 victory over Pfeiffer in Conference Carolinas women's volleyball Saturday at Kornegay Arena. White led all players with 16 kills and only two errors in 23 attempts (.609 hitting percentage) as the Trojans recorded a season-high .417 team hitting percentage.
Mount Olive finishes the season with an overall record of 9-19 and a 5-11 mark in conference play.
Saturday's contest was the collegiate finale for senior setter Laura Vega and junior opposite side hitter Ashlee Reuter, who will graduate in May after just three years of college. Vega recorded 32 assists and an ace, while Reuter tallied three kills, five digs and an ace. Senior Talita Rocha, who had to sit out the match due to an injury suffered two weeks ago at the MOC Volleyball Classic, was also recognized prior to the match.
Mount Olive won the first two sets and appeared to be on its way to a three-set win after a kill and an ace by Plante capped a 10-3 run and gave the Trojans a 15-10 lead in the third set. Pfeiffer (8-19 overall, 5-11 Conference Carolinas) rallied to take an 18-17 lead as Kelly Lancellot contributed three points with two kills and a block.
Sarah Robertson tied the set with a kill, then contributed to a play worthy of Sportscenter's Top 10.
A Pfeiffer attack was going straight to the floor just beyond the three-meter line. Robertson dove and got her fingers just between the ball and the floor. The ball caromed to Trojan libero Nicole Sparks, who was also attempting to dig the attack. Mostly on instinct, Sparks put the ball high in the air and over the net.
Pfeiffer players thought the ball had hit the floor and were celebrating an apparent point. But no whistle blew and the ball landed on the Falcon court for a kill by Sparks and a 19-18 Trojan lead.
Mount Olive's turn to celebrate was short-lived as Megan Schmal's ace capped a 3-0 run and put the Falcons within a point of forcing a fourth set at 24-21. After the Trojans saved one set point when Vega played a short set to White, White and Robertson combined on a block to pull Mount Olive within a point.
Plante's service forced an overpass in the middle directly to White, who put home the kill to tie the set 24-24. After a Pfeiffer time out, Plante's serve forced another Falcon overpass and Vega set to White for the kill to set up match point. Planted followed with a low line drive to the back row to seal the win and end Mount Olive's seven-match losing skid.
The first set saw the two teams post hitting percentages at .440 or above and combine for only five attack errors. Plante and White recorded two kills apiece in a set-ending 4-1 run to give the Trojans the first set.
Service runs by Dezirae Mackey and Reuter keyed a 12-run in the second set as Mount Olive turned a four-point deficit into a 17-11 lead. Back-to-back aces by Meghan Davis helped Pfeiffer get as close as two points, but kills by Robertson and Reuter thwarted the Falcons' rally and enabled the Trojans to take a two-set lead.
Robertson finished with 11 kills and a team-high nine digs to come within a dig of a double-double. Plante added nine kills and White had a match-high five blocks. Mackey, who tallied six kills and one error in 10 attempts Saturday, posted a .591 hitting percentage in 22 attempts in the final weekend of the season.
Jordan O'Bryant led a balanced Pfeiffer attack with seven kills, while setters Davis and Emily Wall recorded 14 assists apiece and combined for three second-ball kills. Schmal shared match-high honors with four aces and Nicole Nitu led all back row players with 11 digs.
Saturday's win was Mount Olive's first over Pfeiffer this season after two four-set losses, including a non-conference loss in the MOC Volleyball Classic. Despite the win, the Trojans finished the season tied for fifth in the Conference Carolinas East Division and will not qualify for this year's conference tournament.
Mount Olive posted a win on Senior Day for the fourth consecutive year. The Trojans have won eight of their last nine Senior Day matches.
