Women's Volleyball Suffers Second Straight Five-Set Defeat

Box Score

Service aces by Charnel Austin and Lauren Lee highlighted a 7-1 run to end the fourth set and force a fifth set, but Mount Olive's comeback effort came up just short for the second straight match as the Trojans fell to Pfeiffer 22-25, 25-20, 25-7, 21-25, 15-13 in Conference Carolinas women's volleyball Saturday at Misenheimer, N.C. Carly White had four of her team-high 16 kills in the fifth set, which saw eight ties and five lead changes. The five-set match was the Trojans' second in a span of 18 hours.

Mount Olive (4-9 overall, 1-5 Conference Carolinas) won the first set, but dropped the next two sets and trailed 20-18 in the fourth set. The Trojans took the lead with three unanswered points on kills by White and Dezirae Mackey sandwiched around Lee's ace. After a Trojan side out on a service error, Austin served an ace and White recorded a kill on set point to send the match to a fifth set.

Three kills by White helped Mount Olive jump out to a 6-3 lead in the fifth set, but Pfeiffer (5-5, 2-1) used kills by Kim Amerell on three straight points to tie the set. The Trojans were down 10-9 when Ashlee Reuter's kill tied the set again and a Falcon attack error put Mount Olive back on top. After Pfeiffer scored the next two points to regain the lead, White's block tied the set at 12-12. But kills by Kelly Lancellot and Amerell gave Pfeiffer the lead to stay. White's kill saved one match point for Mount Olive before the Falcons sealed the win.

Amerell had a match-high 21 kills for Pfeiffer to become the first player this season to record at least 20 kills against Mount Olive. Amerell had five kills in the final set.

A fifth set appeared unlikely after Pfeiffer ran away with the third set. Meghan Davis had all of her match-high four service aces during her 12-point service run as the Falcons raced off to a 12-0 lead. The margin never fell below double digits the remainder of the set. But Mount Olive rebounded in the fourth set, taking an 8-6 lead to eclipse its entire point total of the third set and going on to tie the match at two sets apiece.

Mount Olive rallied from an early three-point deficit in the first set as a pair of service aces by Destiny Ma'ave-Kuewa highlighted a 5-0 Trojan run. Erika Conner's kill broke a 13-13 tie and the Trojans led the remainder of the set. Talita Rocha had a pair of kills in a set-ending 6-2 run, including a kill on set point.

Pfeiffer broke a 2-2 tie in the second set with a 5-0 run and led the rest of the way to even the match. Mount Olive got as close as 15-12, but Pfeiffer answered with a 4-0 and the margin never fell below four points.

Mackey finished with 12 kills and only three errors in 25 attempts for a .360 hitting percentage for Mount Olive. Lee had a match-high 16 digs, while Conner added 15 digs and Austin finished with 10 digs to go with 39 assists. Austin, Lee and Ma'ave-Kuewa served two aces apiece for the Trojans.

Kate Glendenning had 41 assists and three aces for Pfeiffer, while Lancellot led all players with four blocks.

Mount Olive fell to Queens 3-2 at home Friday night, marking only the fifth time in the last six seasons the Trojans went five sets in back-to-back matches. Coincidentally, Mount Olive went five sets in consecutive matches against Queens and Pfeiffer on September 27-28, 2008.

Saturday's match was originally scheduled to be played at Mount Olive, but the match was moved to Misenheimer to accommodate Pfeiffer's homecoming weekend. The Trojans play host to Pfeiffer October 18 at Kornegay Arena.

Mount Olive returns to action Tuesday as the Trojans travel to Raleigh, N.C., to take on St. Augustine's in a non-conference match-up. Match time is 6 p.m.
