Box Score Carly White had 22 kills and four blocks, and Erika Conner added 20 kills and five digs to lead Mount Olive to a 25-18, 30-28, 23-25, 25-14 Conference Carolinas women's volleyball win over Coker Friday night. Both players matched their respective career-bests in kills set last week. It marked the first time two Trojans had 20 kills apiece in the same match since Racey Bartley and Alicia Mote in a five-set win over Queens Sept. 27, 2008.
Sophomore libero Lauren Lee added 12 digs as the Trojans (8-10 overall, 4-6 in conference) won its third consecutive match and four out of its last five. Coker (6-11, 3-5) matched the Trojans with nine aces, and finished with 10 blocks compared to six for Mount Olive.
In game one, the Trojans stormed out to a 6-0 lead, all on service points by Lee. She delivered two aces and Conner and White each had a kill. The Cobras rallied several times in the set to get within four points. They got no closer.
A kill by Kelly Stine cut Mount Olive's lead to 14-10, before Charnel Austin and Conner took over. Austin assisted on a pair of Conner kills as the lead grew to 21-12.
In the second set, Lee again got the Trojans started. Mount Olive led 5-0 with Lee serving, aided by blocks from Austin and White and three attack errors by Coker. The Trojans led, 10-5 before a kill and two service aces by Hannah Vadakin brought Coker its first lead of the match, 11-10.
With the set tied, 11-11, Destiny Ma'ave-Kuewa entered the lineup for Mount Olive and immediately paid dividends, assisting on a Conner kill and adding an ace that put the Trojans back in front. The Cobras came back to take a 21-19 advantage with seven consecutive points.
An attack error returned possession back to the Trojans and a White kill gave Mount Olive the lead, 22-21. Consecutive attack errors by the Cobras put Mount Olive at set point. But Coker fought back, and a kill by Katie McElveen put Coker on the verge of evening the match.
The Trojans fought off three consecutive set points of their own on kills by White Dezirae Mackey and Conner. The latter kill, followed by an attack error by Coker set up the game-winner, a kill by Conner on an assist from Austin.
The Cobras bounced back in the third set. Coker never trailed after giving up the first point, but had to fend off Mount Olive rallies that tied the game, 23-23, following kills from White and Mackey. Kills by Kelly Stine and April Griggs, however, forced a fourth set.
In the deciding game, Mount Olive again built an early lead and this time never looked back. The Trojans built a 20-8 advantage, and only attack errors by the Trojans got in their way.
Taylor Willis paced Coker with 12 kills, while Vadakan added nine and four aces.
The Trojans return to action Saturday afternoon when Mount Olive travels to Laurinburg, N.C. to meet St. Andrews. Game time is 2 p.m.
