Box Score MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Mount Olive was within one point of extending its season-high winning streak to seven, but Pfeiffer saved five consecutive match points and handed the Trojans a 25-23, 21-25, 20-25, 25-16, 22-20 defeat in Conference Carolinas women's volleyball Tuesday at Kornegay Arena. Carly White had a career-high 23 kills to go with nine blocks for Mount Olive, while Nicole Sparks served a season-high five aces.
Mount Olive (11-11 overall, 6-7 Conference Carolinas) overcame a first-set loss by winning the second and third sets, but Pfeiffer (8-10, 5-6) rallied to force the Trojans into their second consecutive five-set match. Mount Olive came back from a two-set deficit for a five-set win Saturday at Limestone.
White sparked the Trojans to a 4-0 lead in the fifth set with a kill and a solo block. Pfeiffer got as close as two points, but Sarah Robertson had kills on back-to-back points, while Dezirae Mackey combined with Robertson and Erika Conner on blocks as Mount Olive took its biggest lead at 13-7. The Falcons scored the next two points, but an attack error put Mount Olive in position for the victory.
Kills by Milana Mervosh and Erin Gray saved the first two match points for Pfeiffer, and after a Mount Olive timeout, Kelly Lancellot and Cate Glendenning combined on blocks on the next two points. After another Trojan timeout, Lancellot combined with Gray on a block to even the set at 14-14.
White's kill gave Mount Olive another match point and Charnel Austin looked to have an ace for the winner. Her serve hit off the top of the tape, but after hanging in the air, landed on the Trojan side of the court to keep the match going.
Pfeiffer then had three opportunities to serve for the match, but Mount Olive was able to side out each time on a pair of kills by White and a kill by Mackey. Robertson's kill gave the Trojans a 19-18 lead, but Jessica Homrich's kill saved a sixth match point for the Falcons. A kill by Kelsey Blauser gave the Falcons their fourth match point, but Robertson's fourth kill of the set kept the Trojans alive.
Lancellot recorded her fourth block of the set, combining with Blauser to break a 20-20 tie. The match ended on a Trojan attack error.
Pfeiffer swept this year's regular season series, winning both matches in five sets. Despite the loss, Mount Olive remains percentage points ahead of the Falcons for second place in the Conference Carolinas East Division. The top three teams in the East Division advance to next month's conference tournament.
After dropping the first set, Mount Olive overcame a three-point deficit in the second set as back-to-back aces by Sparks helped the Trojans build a 21-17 lead. Pfeiffer rallied to tie the set, but the Trojans used a pair of kills by White and an ace by Conner to close the set with a 4-0 run.
Lauren Lee's ace helped the Trojans jump out to a 5-0 lead in the third set before the Falcons battled back to tie the set 8-8. A block by White and Robertson broke the tie and Mount Olive led the rest of the way. A pair of blocks by White - one with Robertson and one with Talita Rocha - highlighted a 5-0 run as the Trojans pulled away from a 17-15 lead to capture the third set.
After a pair of early momentum swings, Pfeiffer took control in the fourth set as Gray's kill broke a 6-6 tie and gave the Falcons the lead for good, setting up the wild fifth set.
White eclipsed the 20-kill mark for the fourth time in her last seven matches. She had 22 kills October 1 against Converse and again October 7 against Coker. White also had a 21-kill performance Saturday against Limestone.
Conner finished with 12 kills, while Mackey had 11 and Robertson added nine. Austin finished with 50 assists and two service aces. Defensively, Rocha had four blocks, while Lee led three players in the back with 14 digs. Conner added 13 digs and Sparks had 10 digs.
Jordan O'Bryant led a balanced Pfeiffer attack with 11 kills, while Homrich added nine. Glendenning recorded 36 assists and shared match-high honors with five aces. Lancellot finished with five blocks and Kim Amerell had four. Kaci Markham led the Falcons defensively with 12 digs.
The Trojans play host to the Mount Olive College Classic this weekend at Kornegay Arena. The four-team tournament gets underway Friday at 5 p.m. and Mount Olive plays its tournament opener against Shaw at 7 p.m. Four matches are scheduled for Saturday, including the Trojans against Virginia Union at 11 a.m. and the Trojans against Belmont Abbey at 3 p.m.
