Trojans Battle Back but Fall to Converse in High-Scoring Conference Clash

MOUNT OLIVE – The University of Mount Olive men's soccer team found the back of the net three times but came up short against Converse in a 6-3 Conference Carolinas contest Saturday afternoon at Amon Field.

The Trojans (2-6, 1-4 CC) answered an early Converse goal with an equalizer from Pierce Slater in the 10th minute before the Valkyries regained control with a pair of second-half scoring runs.

Converse struck just 50 seconds into the match before Slater responded at the 9:35 mark for his second goal of the season to level the score at 1-1. The Valkyries reclaimed the lead in the 19th minute and carried a 2-1 advantage into halftime despite five first-half saves from Trojan goalkeeper Nick Cutlip.

The visitors extended their lead with four goals in the opening 30 minutes of the second half, but Mount Olive continued to battle. Joshua Meza scored his first goal of the season in the 70th minute off an assist from Slater, trimming the deficit before Converse answered moments later. Abdoulaye Saine converted in the 80th minute for his first goal of the year to account for the Trojans' final tally.

Slater finished with a goal and an assist to lead Mount Olive's offense, while Meza and Saine each added their first goals of the season. The Trojans recorded nine shots with four on target.

Cutlip made five saves across more than 75 minutes before Kingston Ouellette entered late and stopped all three shots he faced over the final 14 minutes. As a team, Mount Olive finished with eight saves against Converse's 22-shot attack.

The Trojans return to Conference Carolinas action next week as they look to bounce back on the pitch against Barton on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in Wilson.
