MURFREESBORO — The University of Mount Olive women's soccer team earned a 4-2 road victory over Chowan on Wednesday afternoon, scoring twice in each half to secure the conference win at Chowan University.
The Trojans (4-3-2, 2-0-2) wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as Yaneli Sanchez found the back of the net in the fourth minute off assists from
Ana Caldentey and
Malia Acevedo. Chowan answered in the 13th minute to even the match at 1-1.
Mount Olive regained the lead in the 19th minute when Elie Lopez scored her first goal of the season, with
Charlotte Benson and
Ellie Brock providing the assists. The Trojans carried a 2-1 advantage into halftime after outshooting the Hawks 13-5 in the opening 45 minutes.
Chowan tied the match again early in the second half, scoring in the 53rd minute to make it 2-2. The Trojans responded just under 12 minutes later, as Sanchez scored her second goal of the afternoon in the 65th minute. Lopez and Emma O'Rourke were credited with assists on the go-ahead goal.
Mount Olive added an insurance goal in the 77th minute when Benson scored her first goal of the season off an assist from
Tanya Granholm, giving the Trojans a 4-2 advantage they would hold through the final whistle.
Sanchez led the Trojans offensively with two goals and nine shots, including five shots on target. Benson finished with a goal and an assist, while Lopez added a goal and an assist. Caldentey, Acevedo, Brock, O'Rourke and Granholm each recorded an assist.
Mount Olive controlled much of the attacking play throughout the match, finishing with a 27-12 advantage in shots and putting 16 shots on target compared to four for Chowan. The Trojans also held a 56-44 edge in possession.
In goal, Anais Coyne played all 90 minutes and made two saves to earn the victory, improving to 3-0-2 on the season.
The Trojans return to action with their next scheduled match as they continue their 2026 campaign.
