Acevedo’s Hat Trick Leads Trojans Past Bluefield State, 4-0

MOUNT OLIVE  – The University of Mount Olive women's soccer team responded in a big way Sunday afternoon, cruising to a 4-0 shutout victory over Bluefield State at Amon Field.

Playing its second match in as many days after suffering a 1-0 setback to Virginia State on Saturday, Mount Olive (3-3-2) erupted for four goals while holding the Big Blue (1-2-2) to just three shots.

The victory was highlighted by a career performance from senior forward Malia Acevedo, who recorded the first hat trick of her career with three second-half goals. Acevedo's three goals marked a new career high, surpassing her previous best of two goals against Erskine on Sept. 14, 2024.

Acevedo's performance also marked her first multi-goal game of the season and helped the Trojans produce their highest offensive output of the 2026 season.

Mount Olive opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Hannah Spear found the back of the net for her second goal of the season, giving the Trojans a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.

After controlling play throughout the opening 45 minutes, the Trojans continued to apply pressure in the second half. Acevedo broke through in the 59th minute, scoring her first goal of the season to extend the lead to 2-0.

Just over five minutes later, Acevedo struck again in the 65th minute to make it 3-0. She completed the hat trick in the 71st minute, putting the Trojans ahead 4-0 and capping the most productive scoring performance by a Mount Olive player in nearly four years.

Acevedo's hat trick is the first by a Trojan since Delia Allwood recorded three goals against Lees-McRae on Oct. 22, 2022.

The offensive explosion was supported by another strong defensive effort. Ruby Arsenault played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded her first shutout of the season. Arsenault made one save, with the Trojans limiting Bluefield State to just one shot on goal.

Mount Olive dominated the overall shot count, 32-3, including a 17-1 advantage in shots on target. The Trojans also held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. Acevedo finished with a match-high 12 shots and six shots on goal, while Spear added three shots and two shots on target.

The Trojans return to action with momentum for their next game against Chowan in Murfreesboro at 4 p.m.
