Mount Olive Falls 1-0 After Late Goal from Virginia State

ETTRICK, Va. – The University of Mount Olive women's soccer team held Virginia State scoreless for more than 75 minutes Wednesday evening, but a late goal proved to be the difference as the Trojans fell 1-0 to the former USCAA National Champions.

Virginia State (2-0), winners of the 2025 USCAA National Championship, scored the match's lone goal in the 76th minute when Loryn Sturgis found the back of the net.

Mount Olive goalkeeper Anais Coyne turned in a strong performance between the posts, playing the full 90 minutes and recording three saves while allowing just one goal. Coyne faced four shots on the evening.

The Trojans generated several opportunities offensively, led by Emma Harnage and Charlotte Benson, who each recorded three shots. Harnage placed one shot on goal, while Benson put two of her attempts on frame. Yaneli Sanchez added two shots, and Madyson Brown recorded one shot.

Despite the setback, Mount Olive kept the contest scoreless for 76 minutes against a Virginia State squad that entered the match riding the momentum of its second straight victory. With the loss, Mount Olive moves to 1-2 on the season, while Virginia State improves to 2-0.

The Trojans return to action Saturday, Sept. 5, when they open conference play against UNC Pembroke. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at home.
