MOUNT OLIVE — The University of Mount Olive women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Virginia State on Saturday afternoon at Amon Field.

Virginia State (4-1-1) scored the lone goal of the match in the 14th minute when Erica Mathews found the back of the net unassisted. VSU carried the 1-0 advantage into halftime.

Mount Olive (2-3-2) continued to battle in the second half, but the Trojans were unable to find the equalizer. UMO recorded 16 shots in the match, including six on target, while Virginia State finished with 10 shots and three shots on goal.

Kendall Hackworth made two saves in goal for Mount Olive, while Virginia State goalkeeper Ava Patterson recorded six saves to preserve the shutout.

Yaneli Sanchez and Elie Lopez each recorded three shots for Mount Olive, while Emma Harnage, Malia Acevedo, Rebecca Witkiewicz, and Madyson Brown each added multiple shot attempts. Mount Olive also held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Mount Olive will return to action in its next scheduled contest tomorrow against Bluefield State at 2 p.m. at Amon Field.
