EMPORIA, KS – The Trojans kick off day one of the National Outdoor Track and Field Championships with stellar performances all around from the track and in the field.
Starting off the day, the women's 4x100 meter relay formed by, in order,
Serenity Harvey to start in the blocks,
Futoria Harris, Heaven Roberts, and
Haniyyah Johnson at anchor put forward a blistering 44.55 second display, catapulting themselves into another conference and school record, winning the heat and 2
nd overall time going into the finals. They will race again on Saturday for a chance at the championship trophy.
Harvey then followed this monstrous performance by finishing 14
th in the women's 400 meter dash, posting a time of 54.63 seconds, earning the first All-American honors of the championships.
Sophomore
Leland Smith put on a show for the men's team in his first ever nationals outing, rocking a 10.62 second 100 meter dash, placing 14
th and earning second team All-American honors.
Off the track and despite multiple delays due tp inclement weather, Senior
Haniyyah Johnson was able to launch herself 5.72 meters or 18' 9 1/4 " into the pit, successfully putting herself in a second team All-American finish in 15
th place.
Wrapping up day one,
Futoria Harris burst out of the blocks, finishing 11
th in the 100 meter dash, earning the third and final second team All American honors with an 11.76 second finish.
The Trojans look forward to the second day of competition with men's discus and women's discus, triple jump, and 100 meter hurdles.
