FLORENCE, S.C. — The University of Mount Olive baseball team carried a late lead into the eighth inning, but Newberry surged with three runs to win 3-2, handing the Trojans a road loss.
Mount Olive struck first in the top of the second inning when
Mac James delivered an RBI single to score
Rowan Watt, giving the Trojans a 1-0 advantage. The Trojans continued to apply pressure early, putting multiple runners on base, but were unable to extend the lead.
The pitching staff took control from there, beginning with
John Nelson McLamb, who tossed 5.0 scoreless innings while allowing just two hits. The right-hander worked around six walks and struck out five to keep Newberry off the scoreboard.
Mount Olive added to its lead in the sixth inning as
Mac James launched a solo home run to left field, extending the margin to 2-0. Out of the bullpen,
Gabe Adams followed with 2.0 shutout innings, allowing just one hit while preserving the advantage through seven.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Newberry drew two walks to put runners on base. A two-RBI double down the left field line tied the game at 2-2. Immediately after, a pinch-hit RBI double drove in the go-ahead run, giving Newberry a 3-2 lead.
Newberry scored all three runs in the inning off
Mike Walsh, who took the loss.
Kole Hopkins recorded the final two outs to limit further damage.
Mount Olive created one final opportunity in the ninth inning, drawing a leadoff walk, but Newberry closed out the game and secured the win.
The Trojans now turn their attention to their final weekend series of the regular season against Ferrum in Ferrum, VA, with the first game of the series on Friday at 4 PM.
