Mount Olive Takes a 21-9 Win over Lee University

CLEVELAND, TENN. (April 8) -  Mount Olive women's lacrosse team competed against the Flames of Lee University Sunday afternoon where they took the 21-9 win to finish their season before conference play starts on April 20th. 

With the win, the Trojans finish to 11-4 overall while the Flames have an overall record of 5-11.

Sophomore Morghan Pollock finished the game with five goals on 6 shots, winning two draw controls for the Trojans. Senior Alexa Fitzgerald and redshirt-freshman Karsyn Elliott, had four goals, with one assist, and one ground ball. Sohomores Jazna Dumont and Ava Mullen got in on the action with two goals each, Dumont adding two assists. Maddy Fratus, Libby Berg, Reese Weddle, and Katie Broom also scored one goal, seniors Fratus and Broom both contributing an assist.  

On defense, senior Giavahna Gasdia claimed five ground balls, won four draw controls, and caused one turnover to complete her day on the field. Sophomore Simone McCraw captured three ground balls with two caused turnover, and won a draw control. With a total of 28 ground ball pick ups in the game, 14 different Trojans were able to get stats against the Flames. 

Elliott scored the first goal for the Trojans at the 11:13 mark to tie the game up where Fitzgerald was able to take the lead for the Trojans with an assist from Broom. Lee answered back less than a minute later but UMO did not let a tie game slide and scored four back to back goals before the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was slow with only five total goals being scored, Elliot stats the second quater off with a goal in 43 seconds and two of the three goals for the Trojans being on free possession shots by Pollock anf Fratus. 

The second half of the game was the Trojan Show where they scored 12 of the 21 goals, seven being in the third and five being in the fourth. Fitzgerald had a solo goal at the 13:17 mark to bring the score up 10-4, the scored on a man down disadvantage before the end of the third to bring the score up tp 16-8. By the fourth quarter the Trojans had the win but that did not stop Pollock, Elliott, Mullen, Broom, and Weddle from scoring the last five goals of the game to end with a 21-9 score. 

Junior goalkeeper Ruby Burandt started the game for the Trojans totaling eight saves on 19 shots faced claiming three ground balls. Junior Karissa Doerr had one save in her 4 minutes of play along with freshman Molly Pulliam who also had one save in 10 minutes of play. 

Mount Olive is now gearing up to play in the Conference Carolinas semifinals set on Wednesday April 23, where they are currently the No. 2 seed in the conference.
