MOUNT OLIVE, NC — Mount Olive ended its weekend series against Southern Wesleyan with a dominant doubleheader, winning 11-0 in the opener and 7-5 in the finale.
The Trojans jumped ahead in game one, scoring nine runs in the first three innings. After
Lane McLean was hit by a pitch,
Rowan Watt hit a sacrifice fly, and
Ryder Hancock followed with a two-run single.
Tanner Ferguson added another sacrifice fly, giving the Trojans a 4-0 lead.
Mount Olive broke the game open in the third inning with a five-run rally. Hancock again came through with a two-run double down the right field line before
Connor Tepatti followed with a two-run single to right field.
Mac James added another run later in the inning as the Trojans stretched the lead to 9-0. The Trojans capped the scoring in the fifth inning when James launched a two-run home run to left field, pushing the margin to 11-0.
On the mound,
Aidan Newton delivered a dominant performance, tossing a complete-game shutout. The right-hander allowed just three hits while striking out seven across seven innings to earn the win.
Mount Olive carried that momentum into the series finale, using timely hitting late to secure a 7-5 victory. Southern Wesleyan scored first on a Garrett RBI single, but the Trojans tied it with Ferguson's RBI single. Bullard then singled in another run, and James added a sacrifice fly for a 3-1 lead.
The Warriors tied it in the third, but Mount Olive responded. Howard hit an RBI double, scoring Watt, and Hancock followed with another RBI double to push the lead to 5-3.
Southern Wesleyan tied the game in the seventh, capitalizing on a balk and an RBI single for a 5-5 score to keep it interesting.
Mount Olive answered in the eighth inning to regain control. Watt led off the frame with a double before Hancock drove him in with an RBI double to left center. Ferguson followed with a run-scoring double down the left field line to extend the lead to 7-5.
Kole Hopkins closed the door over the final three innings to secure the victory. The right-hander allowed just one hit and one walk while keeping the Warriors off the scoreboard to earn the win in relief.
Lucas Glover started, allowing three runs with three strikeouts over three innings.
Pete Honse pitched three in relief before Hopkins finished for the win.
With the two wins, the Trojans move to 11-13, with a 6-9 record in Conference Carolina's play. The Trojans look forward to their next midweek matchup against Georgia College State University in Lexington, Sc, with the game beginning at 4:00 PM.
