Trojans Rally in Second Half to Defeat Converse at Home on Church Night

MOUNT OLIVE – The University of Mount Olive men's basketball team used a strong second-half surge and clutch execution down the stretch to earn an 80-76 Conference Carolinas victory over Converse on Saturday night at Kornegay Arena.

Mount Olive trailed 35-30 at halftime after Converse controlled much of the opening period, but the Trojans responded with a 50-point second half to flip the momentum. UMO shot 68.0 percent from the floor after the break while holding Converse to 41 points in the final 20 minutes.

Christian Ananaba led the Trojans with 22 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 9-for-11 from the field while providing key plays on both ends in the closing minutes. Redford Dunton added 20 points, including a pair of timely three-pointers, and Shawn Wilson finished with 13 points while attacking the paint throughout the night. Matt Kirby chipped in seven points and three assists, while Jefferson McLamb and Raul Perez combined for nine points off the bench.


The contest featured 10 lead changes and nine ties, with neither team leading by more than eight points. Tied at 72 late in the game, Ananaba converted a free throw and followed with an offensive putback to give Mount Olive the lead for good. After Converse cut the deficit to one possession, Dunton knocked down a clutch three-pointer before Wilson sealed the win with a driving layup in the final seconds.


Ananaba sparked the Trojans in the closing minutes with key plays down the stretch. With the game tied at 72, Ananaba scored the next three points for Mount Olive, converting a free throw before finishing an offensive putback to give UMO a 75-72 lead with 1:44 remaining.

Converse answered with a layup, but Redford Dunton came right back with a clutch three-pointer, assisted by Matt Kirby, to push the Trojans ahead 78-74. The Valkyries trimmed the margin to two with another layup, but Mount Olive sealed the win as Shawn Wilson drove the lane for a decisive basket in the final moments.

Mount Olive outscored Converse 40-36 in the paint and added 13 fast-break points to secure the win, improving to 9-13 overall and 6-8 in Conference Carolinas play.


The Trojans will continue conference action on Wednesday when they host Barton at Kornegay Arena with game time set for 7 p.m.
