In-State Rival Barton Edges Trojans in Thriller, 85–84

MOUNT OLIVE – The University of Mount Olive men's basketball team battled wire-to-wire but suffered a heartbreaking 85–84 loss to in-state rival Barton in Conference Carolinas action Tuesday night at Kornegay Arena.

The contest featured 15 lead changes and 20 ties as neither team led by more than six points throughout the night. Barton held a slim 47–44 advantage at halftime, but the Trojans responded with strong energy in the second half to keep the game within reach until the final possession.

Mount Olive was led by Jaylen Faber's counterpart Jaevian Alston, who scored a team-high 19 points and added nine rebounds. Redford Dunton and Matt Kirby provided steady contributions, while the Trojans dominated the interior with a 44–38 advantage in points in the paint and a 26–9 edge in second-chance points.

The Trojans had multiple opportunities down the stretch but were unable to outlast the Bulldogs in the closing minutes. Alston converted an and-one stepback jumper in the lane to give Mount Olive a three-point advantage with under three minutes remaining. 

Barton answered with a three-pointer to tie the game, before Matt Kirby drove left and finished off the glass to put the Trojans back in front. The Bulldogs responded once again with a three to take a one-point lead with 45 seconds to play. 

Mount Olive had possession with a chance to win, but Kirby's pull-up jumper from the top of the key fell short, allowing Barton to hold on for the victory.

The Trojans travel to Rome, Ga. to take on Shorter on the road Saturday with tipoff set for 4 p.m.
