Trojans Unable to Complete Comeback in 9-8 Loss to Lander

GREENWOOD, SC – Sunday, the University of Mount Olive women's lacrosse team was on the road for the first time this season but unfortunately lost 9-8 against non-conference opponent Lander at Van Taylor Stadium.

Mount Olive dished out eight goals three of which were scored by team leader Katie Broom who also had two assists. Broom assisted goals by Reese Weddle and Jazna Dumont who both scored in the first quarter. Dumont also scored in the second quarter with the help of Libby Berg. Morgan Pullock had back-to-back goals, one assisted by Ava Mullen the other assisted by Lynsdzy Palensky.

Simone McCraw led the team defensively, securing four turnovers and obtaining five ground balls, while Giavahna Gasdia was the draw control leader with three won and a caused turnover.

Lander held the lead the entire game but not without a fight only holding a lead of three in the first half. Goalie Ruby Burandt had two saves in her full 60 minutes of play. UMO was able to stay even with the Bears and the Trojan defense was able to hold Lander scoreless in the fourth quarter. Katie Broom and Morghan Pollock were crucial in the Trojans' comeback attempt against Lander as they scored the last five goals for the Trojans. Katie Broom's goal at 3:47 tied the game at 5-5 about halfway through the second quarter. Through the third quarter, Broom and Pollock responded to every Lander goal, to head into the fourth quarter down only 9-8.

The Trojans had a total of 20 ground balls, lead in draw controls with 11, and caused 14 turnovers inevitably still losing but not without a fight.

UMO will stay on the road to face conference opponent Lees-McRae in Banner Elk, N.C. at 2 PM on Sunday, Mar. 1.
