Mount Olive Battles to the Finish in 91–86 Road Setback at Shorter Hawks

ROME, Ga. — The University of Mount Olive men's basketball team turned in a resilient second-half effort but came up just short in a 91–86 decision at Shorter on Saturday inside the Winthrop-King Centre.

Mount Olive trailed 44–37 at the break before responding with 49 points in the second half, shooting 48.8 percent after intermission and connecting on timely perimeter shots to keep the contest within reach. The Trojans finished the game shooting 45.8 percent from the floor and 41.4 percent from three-point range, while holding advantages in second-chance points (22–0) and bench scoring (29–14).

Matt Kirby led the Trojans with a game-high 25 points, adding three assists and two rebounds, while Redford Dunton contributed 13 points and eight rebounds. Shane Peterson knocked down three three-pointers as part of a nine-point outing, and Jefferson McLamb added nine points off
the bench.

Mount Olive pulled within two points in the final two minutes and forced multiple turnovers down the stretch, but Shorter converted late baskets and free throws to seal the outcome. 

The Trojans play host to UNC Pembroke for its next contest on Wednesday, Feb. 18 in Pembroke.
